I eventually plumped with Virgin direct. Once all was said and done, no credit card charges and the price did not change when I got to the payment section, so it worked out even... It would be good to know anyone's avoid agents though

The only online booking companies I'd touch would be Netflights, Expedia and Travel Pack but I've never used one.

I've always booked direct with the airline, otherwise all you're doing is putting another layer of t&cs in between you and your booking, and making is harder to manage your own booking, especially when it comes to wanting to amend anything or dealing with time changes or flight cancellations. If I need a middleman because I had an itinerary to complicated to book myself with the airline/s I'd prefer to use Trailfinders, who are also a bricks and mortar agent, and highly reputable.

All the others especially eDreams, Opodo, Bravofly, Lastminute, Travel Trolley, Tripsta, Travelup, Cheapoair, BudgetAir, Omega, Flysharp, Kiwi, GoToGate, Crystal etc etc I'd avoid like the plague.

So many of the online companies don't have live pricing, and when they do book and send you a confirmation they can and do still amend or cancel the booking. So many people say 'I've checked on the airlines website and it says confirmed so its ok right?' and then they find a few weeks or months down the line they get a new confirmation for a different flight with a different airline. There's a difference between being confirmed and ticketed.

The best way is to book direct with the airline though.

I've used crystal travel, Flysharp and travelup numerous times with no issues. Obviously pay with a CC, and within a day you should receive all your itineraries which you can input into the actual flight companies website to confirm everything is ok.
If you have booked with Virgin perhaps put in a price match guarantee within 24 hours with the deal you found and they may give you the difference- nothing lost.
