Help! Found a stone in my bar of chocolate and broke my tooth!

I have just managed to break my tooth on the last corner of a bar of chocolate left over from Christmas 😳😖.I bit down and felt a huge crunch and found a small 'stone'; which was alarming as it's a Lindt Milk Premium Chocolate, with no 'bits' involved. I then realised that half my tooth is missing at the side - which is a new experience for me as I've only ever had one small filling in my life..

I will obviously be contacting an emergency dentist first thing tomorrow (can't go tonight as I'm single parent with small children sleeping), but wondered what I should do about the bar of chocolate, and the offending stone? Do I have any way of proving what just happened to me and what rights do I have as a consumer to expect my food to be free of foreign objects?

I'm not after huge compensation, but I would like to get my dentistry costs covered, as clearly milk chocolate shouldnt have stones in it! I am on a low income & normally have free NHS treatment, but I'm anticipating this tooth repair costing quite a bit. Should I contact Lindt, or Tesco, where I purchased the bar from, in the first instance? I'm not very good at complaining; (far too British!) but I don't feel I can just let this go... any advice would be most welcome. Thanks 😊

Why are you anticipating the tooth repair costing quite a bit?
You can contact Lindt direct from their website under complaints products with copies of packaging, stone etc and see what they say,
The mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.:o

A winner listens, a loser just waits until it is their turn to talk:)
  • Thanks for the advice 😉
I'm just guessing at cost of the repair; as I said, I've never had much 'work' done on my teeth before and don't know how much things cost. I have the whole side of the tooth missing so don't know if it will be a filling or a removal.

If you contact Lindt you might get more than if you informed Tesco. My thinking is Lindt would like to know if a production line has become contaminated.

Especially since you say you are entitled to free dental treatment.

Are you sure it wasn't a filling that was dislodged?
  • I will no doubt find out all at the dentist tomorrow- (but no it's not a filling as it's on the opposite side).

I just would like to know how to proceed with Lindt in case costs are incurred.

You will need to pay for the treatment (if there are any costs) and keep receipts then send them to lindt with your complaints.
  • You will probably be able to have the tooth capped. There might have been hidden decay.., but I don't normally have to 'bite down' hard on chocolate.

Are you saying the op is eating chocolate incorrectly?!

I would contact Tesco and Lindt. You might get a quicker response from Tesco.

Tesco is just as liable for this as they are the seller.

Perhaps it is worth taking a picture of the stone and the chocolate and your tooth, so that you at least have some photographic evidence.

Your contract is with Tesco, not with Lindt. Do you still have the receipt?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
