John Lewis: returning a Christmas gift, paid for by Paypal

Hey all,

On Monday I visited John Lewis to return an unwanted Chistmas gift, which was bought via https://www.johnlewis.com. I was armed with the delivery note with all the details on, and the original packaging. I was told by the refunds person that if the gift was paid for by Paypal they would have to refund to the Paypal a/c of the gift giver, otherwise if paid by credit/debit card then a gift card would be issued to me. After she checked, it turned out the gift was paid for by Paypal, which is unfortunate because the gift giver would find out and would cause embarrassment for the gift giver and for myself. So I left the JL branch with the unwanted gift still in hand. I was fully expecting to be issued a gift voucher and would have been totally happy with that.

If their T&Cs are anything to go by, it seems I would have been better off trying to return it without the receipt:
If you return your item to one of our shops and you'd like a refund but don't have your receipt, order confirmation or delivery note, we'll give you a gift card to the value of the current selling price

The gift is totally unused, still with JL tag on, and isn't subject to any of their exceptions about refunds, so I'm wondering if I was just unlucky with the refunds person I got? :(

  • Go back without the receipt, or get someone else to go for you if you are concerned about being recognised.

Those T&Cs generally apply to the purchaser, although I'm not sure how they'd know it wasn't you. I'd take it back again without a receipt and just say you purchased it before Xmas but have since lost the receipt.
  • Yep, sounds like the way to go - thanks guys.

Without a receipt you may have to accept a reduced amount if it's currently in the 'Sale'.
  • Indeed. I guess I can at least check before and see if it's in the sale.

Just inform the gift giver and get them to return it. There may be a little embarrassment but not as much as when they come to visit you and ask after their gift only to find that you thought so little of it that you no longer have it.

That contains a lot of assumptions about the nature of the gift and the OPs relationship with the giver.

Why does anyone use Paypal for buying items like this?

Saves you typing out your card details. Its safe and secure. You have paypal buyer protection.

Many reasons. Its not exactly a strange thing to do. I use paypal on many stores.

Well the OP is the one who raised the embarrassment issue in the first place so I don't think anything I've said is that much of a leap from there.
