Which fryer?

So Mr Suki informs me he no longer likes oven chips and wants real chips
Don't get me wrong, we don't eat a lot of chips, maybe once a fortnight
The only time I deep fry anything is when I do HM onion barjees
I hate the smell of cooking oil
So are those actifry or air fryers any good?
I'm looking at what makes the best chip and can I do battered stuff in them ?

I have an actifry, and I think out of all my gadgets this is the one I would replace if it broke. I use if for the obvious things like chips, roasties etc, but also for "wet" dishes like bolognaise, mince in gravy etc and it makes a mean corned beef hash!
I have used it for frozen battered things like fish ( I remove the paddle as it breaks up the food) but don't think it would work for homemade battered foods as it wouldn't get to a high enough temperature to set the batter iyswim x0 -
I'm with Mr Suki on this one - a lot of oven chips are prepared in sunflower oil or similar and they seem to give off a kind of rancid smell when cooking. McCain seem to be quite bad for this.
I don't have an air fryer but have a Breville Halo and absolutely swear by it. It uses halogen technology and acts as a grill plus can be used at an angle to do chips and roast veggies.
It's cheapest on Amazon:

It's easy to clean and doesn't give off that frying smell.:hello:0 -
I have an Actifry, and have found that it makes the chips too dry. They have very very little moisture - almost like chewing saw dust

I've not tried to make anything else in it after the chips were such a failure.Smiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...
..one size fits all... and nobody minds if you give it back.☆.。.:*・° Housework is so much easier without the clutter ☆.。.:*・°SPC No. 5180 -
Same as Springdreams, Had an actifry, the chips were not good, too dry and a weird texture so binned it in the end.
We the chippy or the tiny fryer I bought from Lakeland for £17 when I was weak one evening and craved proper Calamari
A lot cheaper :T Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!
£300/£1300 -
I like my actifry, I parboil potatoes before I dry fry them. I also think it depends on what potato being used. I once got a sack of Italian potatoes they were the best chips ever, but I haven't been able to get any more. Perhaps a good thing really as it would have been chips and salad every night.
I like the actifry for oven chips, just seems to make a better job of crisping them up, compared to the oven.
I hate cleaning it, don't mind the pan and paddle but the top gets a bit manky.0 -
I have an airfryer (phillips, I think) and we really enjoy the chips that it makes.
It can handle anything that is frozen and just need to be warmed. Sometimes if we have leftovers, I warm them in the microwave and then crisp them in the fryer.
It probably could handle wetter batter as well - but the results would be far more desirable with a traditional fryer, IMO.0 -
Well I took on board your comments and went out shopping today
Thought long and hard and realised the actifry/air fryers weren't going to work for my intended purposes
So bought an deep fat fryer
I'm laughing cos all the displays were full of steamers, magic bullet type things, juicers etc, all promoting healthy eating, and I'm in buying a fryer
It's quite bigger then I thought I'd get but it filters and stores the oil and it all goes in the dishwasher
The oil being filtered and stored in a tank is what swung it. I'll not be tempted to do chips because the pan is full of oil

Good afternoon
Just delurking to say which fryer did you buy Suki? I think oven chips smell rancid lately too. I think actifry and some halo ovens are too expensive, so would be interested in a fryer.
Thanks

I'm with Tiddlywinks on this. Have just had a breville halo brought for me and can't recommend it enough. Makes gorgeous chips and roasties, crisp and fluffy on the inside. You won't go far wrong with that.0
