One of the 5 has indicated that he will nominate mum to receive his share under a deed of variation which is very kind of him.

Is she going to return the favour by leaving him a share of her estate?

The offer from him was unconditional, and unprompted. He doesn't want or need the money. He wants to honour his dad's wishes which were frequently reiterated to all the steps by his dad (the others fell out with their dad over it).

I don't want to go into all the historic details (there's probably a thread knocking around somewhere) but he has been the only one who has supported mum and he is now firmly part of our family.

I am sure that he would be named in her will as a beneficiary regardless of the deed of variation.
