What just broke off my car?
Comments

It's an 07 Vauxhall Corsa, done 30000 miles.0
-
Just for reference.
Mine went on a ford focus. Replacement was done in 1-2 hours and was charges £107 fully fitted inc.
Said you should change in pairs but if its mainly you driving they will be different in 10000 miles anyway so can just have the one done if wanted.
Hope that helps.0 -
would i take a car with a broken coil spring down the motorway?
not a chance in hell
you have no idea to what extent that the spring has failed, where is the broken spring in relation to your tyre ? if the spring is damaged enough it could rub the tyre under load and you could potentially loose a tyre at motorway speeds0 -
If you're going to use it, check there's nothing rubbing/cutting into the tyre.0

Broken springs can come off the strut with no warning and when they do the tyre can get punctured. No warning just a bang and a screech as the spring is embedded into the tyre and prevent it moving.
Dont risk it.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
I echo the above...DO NOT risk it, if the remainder of the spring gets past the bottom cup it will go straight into the tyre or brake line.
Usually its the bottom coil that snaps and the coils higher up are wider hence the possibility if jumping the bottom plate, Fiestas are notorious for it (mk6 56 plate stuff) my sons did it on the drive and the whole side collapsed down on the tyre, imagine that at 70mph !
There are of course exceptions, my mazda for example has springs that are all the same diameter so even if a could goes it cab never "hop off"
I'm sure there are lots who happily drive round with a broken coil until mot and get away with it....but honestly unless you know your design don't risk your life and others driving with a broken spring.
Oh and as mentioned you really should now change both.....should be about £100 a side from a garage......£<20 if you did it yourself.0 -
Can you hire a car for the day?0

Common issue on Vauxhall's unfortunately.
Had 2x rear's on the Cavalier I had, 4x on the Vectra (2 sets of rears), and so far a pair on my current Insignia.
Brother in law has had 2x sets of rears on his Zafira, and just replaced a pair on my wife's Corsa.Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0 -
One spring has broken - when will the next one (which has had almost exactly the same usage) break? Or will the original break further?

Hence the reason I normally repair in pairs. It isn't solely down to speed humps, it is definitely a well known Vauxhall fault.Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0
