    I prefer Imessage

So what happens if you want to send a message to contacts who are not using Apple devices? The message gets sent as an SMS or MMS. ;)

I like that you can also have it on your computer (so long as it's on your phone too). Great for video, photos as well as messages. I tend to use it over wifi rather than mobile data, so doesn't cost any more than already paying for internet connection.
Not found any cons so far.

I have it on my phone for a family group and it's data included in my BT broadband.
How do I put it onto my computer ? (Windows 10 )

    Thanks

Thanks Ballyblack for putting on a link to instructions for computer.

Cairndog, it's really easy to set up on computer, but any problems, give a shout and am sure myself or someone else can help. Just so much easier to type on a keyboard for me, rather than on a mobile.

I have iPhone & so do almost all my family so we use iMessage for most texts & whatsapp for photos & videos. I have family in Australia & iMessage works fine for this too. I have a friend in Australia who doesn't have iPhone so we use whatsapp for text & phone calls ( & now video calls). Usually, when I visit Australia, I get a Monthly SIM in my unlocked iPhone. It usually costs about £25. I'm wondering if I really need to do this. If I keep my own SIM ( on Virgin monthly) I can communicate with my family in UK by iMessage ( & FaceTime) but can I use whatsapp to call my friend & family in Australia. Would there be any problems if I am using my own UK sim? Hope I've explained this OK.

you can call on Whats app free if the receiving mobile mobile has whats app installed. nothing to do with ur Sim.

I use free 'Viber' similar to 'whatsApp' but is better because it works on any tablet (as well as phone). Uses wifi

  • I can't see on the home screen on my phone that there are any whats app messages until I actually click on the green folder and open whats app. Is there a way of being able to see if I have a whats app message waiting on my home screen?

Hope I am making clear what I mean.

Have you got notifications turned on in your phone settings. If so, you should see that you have a whatsapp message waiting for you even when your phone is locked. On my iPhone I can choose to have just the message notification or to include the first few words of the message.

Most of the pros and cons have already been discussed but I found whatsapp to be a heavy battery drain and as only a handful of my contacts have it, I've uninstalled it and only use it (or viber) when I go abroad and know I'm going to be in touch with specific contacts and get them to install the same app.
    That works for me

To include the first few words on your home/ lock screen you need to go into Whatsapp- settings- notifications- show preview.
