    I was of the belief that the landlord had to be responsible for things like windows irrespective of whatever the AST states, you've just helped confirm that.

    Much appreciated. I'll update this thread with the outcome whenever the semi-literate luddite we're dealing with responds.

    But to answer a few of the questions - nope, definitely not accidental damage, we weren't even in when it happened. It hadn't been cleaned, opened or even touched recently. It's been so damn cold and windy there's not been much call for having the skylight open!

    By all means deal with the letting agent, but do write a formal letter to the landlord with the details that G_M suggests as well.
