Of course it will imply that - the company providing it want to sell it to insurers/brokers, they're hardly going to say anything else.

The reality though is often very different as the licensing and transactional costs can be a barrier to use.

You could be right, but they subscribe to all sorts of other databases. Strange that this one is too expensive for them. I'll stick with my theory that they don't want a database like this at all.

Incidentally, you picked up a 'Thank You' from my stalker. ;)

I know that you're sceptical but there are different types of databases that insurers can "subscribe" to. The NCB databases are commercial offerings from data businesses (in this case Experian & Lexis Nexis) and so the purpose of those databases is to make money for the providers not to provide a service to the consumer.

Re your stalker - should I be worried? :D
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.

It's odd that in nearly fifty years of motoring and many changes of insurance company I have never once been asked to prove my no-claims record.
So either they have always checked somehow either directly with a previous company or on some kind of database, or they have just taken my word for it.

  • Seems to me the insurer have an operational cost choice:-
    > pay for the service that is as stated available
    > ask everyone instead but then they must file and log each proof of NCD
    > only ask for proof randomly or at point of claim if suspicious and cut the logging costs
    > there are other databases of accidents by car / driver - so I figure they can check you had not lost your NCD "from the other side" (of course not all claims are for accidents)

In any event, the key is don't lie when buying insurance and you will be OK so long as you can prove it on demand. Typically motor renewal notices seem to helpfully include details of NCD these days.

And if you have your policy documents which correctly record your declared NCD - you should be fine.
I am just thinking out loud - nothing I say should be relied upon!
I do however reserve the right to be correct by accident.
