To be honest I find the prices are generally the same on a whole shop with the main supermarkets savings would come if you have the time to go round them all to pick and choose. Quality I don't really notice much difference in them either overall.

I am considering cost hence my question on the min order value to avoid me having to add items for the sake of it to get to minimum.

I just rang Asda, think I confused them as my question was 'off script' :rotfl:

The website is very confusing as min spend on my basket is showing as £25 but it states over £40 in the t&c so I rang to check what it is for my postcode. Apparently it depends on if you are near a store (i am) but also depends if you choose something that needs to come from another store which will put the delivery up to £40 min. What I was told is I won't know the min delivery charge until I have filled my basket which seems really odd, I am not sure if that can be correct.

If you are likely to opt for Asda, you might want to double check whether they still reserve the full price of the basket on your card when you order and then take the full cost when its delivered - with the reserved amount being released back to your card some days later - If I recall correctly they are the only one that does this - the others all reserve about £2 on the card. It has caused some customers some problems in the past. They may have changed this practice but its worth checking out

Thanks OP for thread and Chrisv for link to Asda offer. I have been doing my grocery shop online for few years now, currently with Sainsburys on 12 month anytime pass which I got half price at £30, due to run out in a couple of weeks. Generally pleased with Sainsburys, but fancy change and don't want to pay £60 to renew. Asda at £30 for year is good. They seem to have available slots for next day and you can order up to midnight, Sainsburys is 11pm. Downside is 2 hour slots, Sainsburys are 1 hour. I've had a look at the staples I buy, Asda are most often cheaper. So I might go for it on monthly payment, can then cancel remaining months if not happy.
I rang Asda to see when the half price offer was running to. Had to explain what I was asking several times, I found advisor difficult to understand (although very polite)and in the end they didn't know, offer either shows on website or doesn't. Hmmm, so not as good as Sainsburys on that score, perhaps that's how they can charge less!

The T&C also state:

To use your Delivery Pass you must spend £40 or more on your order on Asda Groceries. Asda reserves the right to amend this minimum basket spend at any time. If we do decide to change the minimum basket spend the change will not apply to the Delivery Passes which have already been purchased, but will apply to passes purchased subsequent to the change.

From week commencing 30th March we will be trialling a 12 month anytime Delivery Pass, where the minimum basket spend will be £25. Whether this trial is available to you will be visible when you visit your account at Asda Groceries. If you cannot see this, unfortunately we are not able to provide this in your area at the moment.

So you would actually need to create and log into your Asda account to be able to tell whether the £25 minimum order value applies to you or not. It does to me.

Generally the 25/40 questions means that you have to order at least £25 of stuff before you can check out. You pay a delivery fee on this amount, even if you have a delivery pass.

£40 is the amount that your delivery becomes 'free' with your delivery pass if you have one.

I had a Sainsbury's delivery pass last year, it worked well until I joined Slimming World and then I found that I couldn't do a 'decent' value for money Slimming World friendly shop on Sainsbury's so I didn't renew it. (that and the nectar card points halved in value and I wasn't getting as many as before! I usually paid for my entire Christmas shop with them)

I would have an Asda but as someone has already mentioned they do have a habit of 'reserving' the amount before they take the actual amount of of your bank without unreserving the original amount. They also used to (haven't done an online shop with them in years because of this problem so I don't know if they still do) reserve the full amount when you placed your order so a) if you didn't have the money in your account at the time (ie: you were placing your order on Monday for delivery on payday Friday) it wouldn't go through because the money wasn't in your account and b) they repeated this every time you edited the order. I don't think they do it to this extent anymore but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

They told me at one point it only happened to Visa Electron cards, but the amount of people who have this problem can't all have the one card!


I have a Tesco one now, I like the option to pay monthly so I can cancel it if I decide to go in store but to be honest £6 a month isn't too bad either way and I like the convenience as I can't drive and don't want to struggle with heavy things or pay for taxi's when Tesco can delivery every day if I want them to just for £6 a month (as long as I have at least £40 shopping). Midweek is £3 a month. If you don't use it for a particular month - or don't use it enough for the full £6 to be used that month - ie only have one delivery in a £4 slot) they refund you the difference by way of an e-coupon to your grocery account so in my example they'd give you £2 back.

I like that I also get free next day delivery on Tesco direct and the other subsidiaries like the clothing dept. I have to buy a lot of clothing to replace those soiled by my grandad who has dementia and that comes in so handy!

The wine part free delivery was very handy for a last minute present over Christmas too! I also like that it's just an hours delivery slot and on a personal note also that we're one of the first in the slot rather than the last one (so often late) from Asda as we're so close to the Asda store.

I find Iceland to offer the best deal. No differing charges for time of day.

If your spend is under £35 they charge £2 if its over £35 delivery any time is free.

please be aware Asda delivery slots are mostly not available at least in my area. So check it before signing-up for a year.

I'm in south london, Tesco is the only supermarket where slots are available even just a night before. Morrisons doesn't delivery in my area and ASDA ain't got slots available for next day.

I've never had problem getting a next day delivery. Just had a look at my Asda account, and there are 8 slots still available for tomorrow if I wanted one.
