Dog urine works. Getting hold of some if you don't own a dog could be tricky though, trying to collect some in your local park from other dogs might make you look a little suspect!
I believe there are sprays based on predator urine available but not sure.
Failing that, placing rags soaked in Ammonia is also said to work.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

Hi thanks for that but no dog and just laughing at the thought of running round the park collecting some think i might end up getting bitten:rotfl:0 -

You do know that's not the end that bites, don't you . . . :rotfl:I want my sun-drenched, wind-swept Ingrid Bergman kiss, Not in the next life, I want it in this, I want it in this
Use your imagination, or you can borrow mine!0 -

Get an air rifle0

Wire mesh - google or watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIdjbLmKMng
We also deterred squirrels by spreading the smelly straw bedding from ferret cages around but that would be a last resort.
Another option is to feed the squirrels so that they don't bother digging for your tasty bulbs.0 -
+1 for .22 air rifle and telescopic sight. Mate of mine does exactly that, his garden is virtually squirrel free now - and any he kills goes to a mate of his who cooks and eats them, win win!!0

Place I used to live in had an acre of woodland and squirrels were a real problem. A .22 with mil-dot sights worked wonders in keeping their numbers down. Left unchecked, they caused a huge amount of damage - they love to eat the bark from sycamores, killing the trees.
Course that is no use if you live in town where such a thing would be illegal. Traps are the next best thing and are what the pest control people round here tend to use.For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
I got a trap (Defender I think) from ebay. Caught 3 tree rats in one month period, not seen any since but will see what spring will bring.0

I'd probably put down some alternative food, such as peanuts and the like; that, or the above air rifle. I quite like squirrels, so that mesh in the soil or peanuts would be my choice.0
