HSBC Advance - any point reapplying if rejected?

They turned me down last year. :(

Has anybody been rejected and then applied again and been accepted? Or would I be wasting my time?

I can't see any particular reason why I'd be permanently unsuitable - I did open quite a few current accounts last year, so it may have been too many credit checks in too short a time. Or else I was too honest on the application - I told it that I would only be paying in £1,750 per month when my salary is more than that. But I've heard that they're fussy beggars, so it might be something I can't change such as my postcode (council estate) in which case there's no point in bashing my head against it.

Thanks for reading and I hope everybody is having a good 2017 so far. :)

  • I applied online last year in Jan I think when they had a switch incentive and was rejected. It was my first ever rejection me thinks so I was surprised. Anyway few months later around Aug I applied again when they had a switch deal again, but this time I applied in branch and I was accepted. I would suggest applying in branch as people had problems with online lengthy application process before. Also I think it helped I had my documentation with me albeit maybe not as they should be able to check my details easily with any credit agencies and an electoral roll. In short I would give it a go but in branch if you can.

I was rejected for the Advance account when I applied in October (for the incentive) but they offered me their Bank Account instead. The application was my 15th current account application since June (with 2 credit card applications also) so that may have had an impact on the application.

I didn't open the account offered as it didn't offer enough to warrant managing a 14th current account.

I already hold my mortgage with HSBC so they probably have a record of my income when I last remortgaged which was below £1750. My net income is now over £1750 but pension contributions take me below it. I will probably apply again at some point but it may be difficult if they want to see evidence of earnings. Funding the account isn't a problem but they probably don't want the account used just for the incentive and a route to the regular saver which would be my reason for applying.

We responded to an invitation from them to apply. So I rang them and after confirming there wasn't going to be any fees involved they transferred us over the phone. I wonder if they are influenced by how the account is managed. We got to a stage, before we got their letter, where our overdraft, after always being in use, hardly ever got used.

Would suggest applying again, but this time as someone said above just go into the branch to do this.

Been rejected twice in the past- probably because I was too honest about my salary which is under 1750 a month and said I would top up the amount from savings.

Applied again last month and immediately accepted online- probably because my take home is now about 1750 net, lol.

They did pay out the incentive within two weeks of the switch though :p
  • HSBC are pretty poor for customer service imo, generally the people are nice enough, but the processes seem to let them down. I would suggest looking somwhere else.

I pretty much agree with this. ^^ Plus their online banking site is really complicated to use. OP.

I have just tried applying for this and got a message about needing more time to review my application, which i have never had before as I earn a lot more than the required amount.

    They certainly seem very picky!

I wonder if they made the whole process more stringent when various Governmental authorities started to investigate HSBC.

I couldn't recommend them, they are a bit random and the internet banking isn't the best. But if you want to do it for the generous incentives then do it the old fashioned way. Make an appointment, go into branch with all your papers etc. You may need to actually show that you have 1750/month coming in. Their staff are pretty helpful and seem to have a say in whether to do business with you or not.
