'Star of the Sea'was really good and about a sailing ship crossing the atlantic with passengers hoping to find a better life and escaping from the potato famine in Ireland back in the mid 19th century, all their stories and how even when they got to NYC how hard it was to carry on and even land there, I thoroughly enjoyed it
On slightly different (but related lines) I thoroughly recommend "Sacred Hunger" by Barry Unsworth about a slave ship employed in the triangle trade. I read it a few years ago and mentioning it has reminded me that I want to read it again.0 -

A brilliant read, so thoughtful about dementia, coupled with a thriller element and by a first time author.
Our book groups' favourites on 2015 were both by first timers - the above and The Undertaking, by Audrey Magee.
I'm in the middle of The Chosen, by Kristina Ohlsson, a new Scandinavian writer to me. Hope it will last my idling time at the airport and part for the flight, before I try to sleep.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.

I've just read The Templar Salvation by Raymond Khoudry. It's a thriller about modern people looking for Templar treasure. (Miles better than Dan Brown but not a patch on Chris Kuznesi). It's a sequel but I couldn't remember anything about the first one. It was disapointing, I was in favour of the bad guy's mission (although not his brutal methods) so didn't really root for the good guys. Plus the bad guy was better written - he actually had a backstory whereas the hero was a stereotypical perfect at everything FBI operative, and the heroine was clever, strong and resourceful all the time that she was on her own, but as soon as she was in a scene with the hero turned into a helpless damsel in distress who couldn't keep her hands off hm.
I don't think I'll be reading any more of his, and might give away the one on my TBR pile unopened...
I've just started A History of the Rain (can't remember who it's by), which is quirky and interesting so far.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -
Finished "THE DEATH MASK" a good read, interesting to see how sports stars in the USA are treated with such importance that victims of assault are usually not believed (allegedly),now on to "DEAD MANS TIME "by Peter James , a vicious robbery, an elderly victim, a trail leading from Brighton to New York, with links to the waterfront gangs from the 1920s, sounds great just up my street!!0

There's a sequel - Redemption Falls. I've got it but I can't remember enough about Star of the Sea so I'd have to re-read that first. I'll get round to it eventually...Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -

Only trouble with this forum is I keep seeing books I haven't read
yet but want to
Popped in to take my library books back with the firm intention of not getting any more until I had reduced some of my existing one on the shelves indoors.
Who am I kidding I just had to have a quick scan whilst waiting to return them and blow me if I didn't spot 'One Night in Winter by Simon Sebag Montefiore, which had been recommended on here so got that out, plus a Denise Mina one that I hadn't read, and another one that I just fancied .So now I have not only my book club book on the go , but also the One Night in Winter one as well. Good job I like reading:):)
JackieO x
Memo to self ,Return Library books, and don't get any out for a month:):)

Just finished Without Mercy by Jefferson Bass. much the same as his other books in the series. Not bad, but then not outstanding.
My next book came from a facebook post by my DIL.
A brutal triple murder in a remote Scottish farming community in 1869 leads to the arrest of seventeen-year-old Roderick Macrae. There is no question that Macrae committed this terrible act. What would lead such a shy and intelligent boy down this bloody path? Will he hang for his crime?Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

Still reading The Interestings - on p.264 of 468, so over half way. Still enjoying it, but itching to finish so I can go on to the next one! (I've got three arrived that I requested from the library, so need to get on!)
Good reading everyone!Keeping two cats and myself on a small budget, and enjoying life while we're at it!0 -
I'm reading "His Bloody Project" too, Syman. It was a Christmas present from my daughter. She's a librarian and she had also recommended the Harry Quebert one.
I am enjoying HBP, it is a bit different since you know 'whodunnit' and he's in the jail from the start and he's happy with that. It's a different mix of fact and fiction.Sewing 88/COLOR]Woollies 19Card s 91Reading 37/400
