I wont be able to fit a y connector anyway as the connection between the pipe and edge of cupboard wall is so tight it wouldn't fit.

Have the cold in at moment, just have to finish cutting off the end of the waste connector under the sink to attach the hose and can test.

Editing your first post is confusing.

Run the hot tap or trace the pipes to check you've connected hot to hot.
Check the isolation valves are open. The screwdriver slot is in line with the pipe when open and across it when closed.
Use a jubilee clip on the waste pipe.

When I run the hot tap the pipe where the cold connection is currently feels warm so I am guessing thats the hot connection?

If the red and black hoses are connected properly at the rear of the machine the red pipe should be connected to the hot water pipe. The hot water pipe is the one that gets hot with the hot tap running.
