I have been admiring the bluebells today too. The woods have always been my calm place and walks with the DC are my most favourite thing to do.

You describe your trips out so beautifully.

  • Aww, thank you Robin. I do love bluebell time, but it goes so quickly.

First day back at work today. It went ok but lots to do between now and half term. I have had to transfer some savings to eke out the month. Looking at the spending tracker I have spent almost £400 on diesel this month . Admittedly it does include diesel spent doing the uni run, but too much has gone on ferrying teenagers to facilitate their social lives. I need to pull this back as that amount is not sustainable.

  • Survived the first week back at work. I was brave and put forward my suggestion. I have to wait for an official response but the initial reaction was positive rather than negative.

Last night turned out to be eventful. When I picked up DS2 from school he couldn't straighten his neck at all and looked lopsided. I took the other children home and left them with DS1 ( DD2 was home after her shift) and took DS2 to A and E which is about an hour's drive. Thankfully it turned out to be a muscle in his neck that had gone into severe spasm so with painkillers, exercise and muscle gel stuff it should ease and get better within a couple of weeks. We got home for 10 which I was very thankful for.

I need to do some work tasks today and get a fair amount of housework done. I'm hoping that perhaps I might be able to get an evening walk in if I get through all the jobs today!

    Have a good Saturday :)

I'm glad DS's problem was 'just' a muscle - painful and scary but should hopefully be right soon enough.

Well done for speaking up at work! I have a theory that suggestions are sometimes welcome because management know there's a problem but haven't a clue what to do about it! Or maybe don't see the point of view of the staff, as I'm finding out at my work: they are taking into account different things and it can be useful to have ideas from he floor.

Wannabe, I know very little about broad beans but your question sparked school memories and I googled 'grow a broad bean in a cup' and came up with this: http://www.greatgrubclub.com/grow-a-bean-plant which is what I remember kids doing. If it's a plant in soil, though, I would have thought HoneysuckleLou is your woman :).

  • Of course Wannabe! I would sow the seed in a 9cm pot. Broad beans are quite hardy and will grow outside without the need for greenhouse protection. Cherryfudge' s link shows a useful way of growing a seed so that children can see what is happening and can understand the process inside the plant pot. When the seed has germinated, keep it watered and look out for when the roots reach the drainage holes of the pot. At that point carefully pot on either in the ground or a larger pot. The plant will need a little staking as it reaches full height. The biggest pest to look out for is blackfly. Washing them off with soapy water is an effective way to get rid of them.

If you need to grow a runner bean, it's a similar process but they are less hardy and will need to wait until the last chance of frost has passed. Keep indoors for the time being. As runner beans grow they will need something to climb like a bamboo cane.

    Hope that helps.

  • Thank you Cherryfudge...I'm amazed by how much "lighter " I feel, knowing that I was able to voice the suggestion. It took all my courage!

I went to work for 3.5 hours and have done a bit more at home. I must confess I sat down and read a book this afternoon. Haven't done that for ages. I took it with me and read during the wAit at A & E and got so gripped I needed to finish it today. It was so relaxing!

Money wise has not been so relaxing...DD2 has misplaced her chef hat. She has looked everywhere and does need one, so I ended up ordering her 2, so that she can keep one at college.

Thank you cherry and hsl. I think the link you give cherry is what I'm supposed to be aiming for. Fingers crossed we can make one grow :rotfl:

So when you have a bean plant you can post the crop to HoneysuckleLou's DD to make something delicious out of it. :)
Hope your son is better now HoneysuckleLou?

  • Thank you Cherryfudge. He is being very careful and dosed up on Calpol ( the older sort!), thank you. If it doesn't ease over the next day or two, he'll have to go to physiotherapy but hoping that exercising along the doctor's guidelines, will help.
