Would like to take a 1yr sabbatical from work to travel. Possible?

FWIW the Civil Service do offer this, but only after completing the two year's service.
The the OP: I suggest that you ask HR to let you see their employee policies, and maybe ask someone there but as a hypothetical question (eg "This is something I would like to do some time in my life" rather than making it seem imminent).
A broader comment: simply travelling is fine for 18-year olds, but something I find boring and self-indulgent. See if you can do some voluntary work in an interesting country, or at least some kind of study or structured activity. Something like this would also enhance your value to a future employer, in a way that boozing in a Bangkok bar might not.0 -
...surely a company who wants loyal employees can see if they allow something like this for me, I will repay them with loyalty in the long-term knowing they helped.
Do you really consider yourself a 'loyal employee' when you're saying you want to take a year off after less than 2 years with the company?
Perhaps start thinking about yourself being a loyal employee after say 10 or 15 years service.
Being with a company only a matter of months and then thinking of going off travelling the world for a year wont convince many employers that you are loyal. Indeed, as has been said, you'll probably find you have no job to come back to.0 -
Does your employer have an intranet with info like this included? i doubt that 2 years would be enough.Hi all,
I'd like to take a 1 year sabbatical from work to travel the world.
I have been in my company for nearly 2 years. Is it realistic to have this kind of conversation with my employer?
How should I approach it? Who should I talk to?0 -
You mention in your other thread that you could pick up work when you return anyway, so don't worry about your employer. It is unlikely they would worry too much about getting rid of you if their circumstances required it. Plan what you want to do and then do it.

However, as you've never been away before, ease into it with a few weeks first to make sure you're cut out for it. That way your not even risking your job or your £20,000 until you know a bit more about whether you'll like it than you do now.0 -
Baling out less than 2 years into a job is not "loyal" . Not that it matters, because, I doubt your employers would be loyal to you anyway.
Just go, do what you want to do.0
