haha, I know, these are not big things we ask, I have used this forum a handful of times about little things I was not sure about, and always got one snarky remark amongst, I must say the majority of helpful straightforward replies....if it was an important thing, I would not ask here....these snarkers are know it alls, and I guarantee I know stuff they don't know, but if they asked me a question, I would reply and and not be obnoxious.........now I am off, as I don't live on this forum...and I might be back in a few months when another 'jeez' question pops in to my head!

Is the car insurance due then?

    Here's a suggestion.

If someone posts a question that seems obvious to you, no matter how simple or basic, either answer it helpfully or move on. No one is born knowing all this stuff.

If someone is obviously trolling or on a wind-up mission, call them out.

If someone is being obnoxious or self-important, or obviously isn't interested in hearing different opinions, feel free to have a go.

This forum is a good resource, but I am not surprised that many new posters post once and don't come back. Just be kind to people; it's not that hard.

The new MOT supersedes (ie. replaces) the old one - you should be able to check your MOT status online at It should show your car's MOT expiry as that of the new MOT; that's when it needs to be re-tested and you can forget about the old one.

It's not uncommon for this to happen, for example when buying a used car it makes sense to have the garage provide it with a new MOT from the date of purchase, regardless of how long was left on the old one.

There is nothing to say that the dates of vehicle licence/road tax, MOT, insurance have to align, so long as they all run contiguously. You have to have an MOT to get your road tax, but it doesn't matter whether it's part-way through.

Indeed (provided you do keep up with the dates) it can be handy having them out of step, so you can get one sorted without worrying about the other at the same time.
  • No, you cannot use your car without either tax, or MOT. It must have both, and both must be valid.

    Jeez.

You need to be covered by an MOT at all times if your vehicle is on the road

    Beaten to it ......

"Beaten to it" but you are both still wrong.
You don't always need a valid MOT and VED if your vehicle is on the road as it's perfectly okay to drive to and from a prebooked MOT test provided that your car is roadworthy.
    Jeez.

    Jeez.

Which is why I said 'use', because driving to and from an MOT in my mind isn't the use case the OP stated, being that they were asking if it was OK to have no MOT for at least an ENTIRE MONTH.

Bearing in mind I was answering the question of someone who has managed to pass a driving test and buy a car without actually understanding the (very basic) responsibilities of vehicle ownership, I didn't think it necessary to confuse them even further with the one small exemption to the MOT and VED requirements.

So putting correct information may confuse people?
It appears that you don't like people pointing out factual errors in your posts do you, so how do you thinks newish posters feels about your sarcastic replies? "Jeez".

Can't you post answers and advice without attempting to act superior?
