MOT too early

Options
I did an MOT on the wrong car, 2 months early, due to a mix up in my brain and the number plates had been swapped over this year, so when I got the reminder I just looked at the reg on the letter and not the car make - anyway......do I just keep the MOT and wait for the reminder for this car, is it still valid in a couple of months?

do you just need a valid MOT at the time of tax renewal, or does the date or MOT and tax start need to tally up?

You only need a current mot the date you got it doesn't matter. Just get the other one done too.

The new MOT is the valid one, if you wish to MOT it again in a couple of months time it is up to you.

so say my tax to pay is in February 2017. I just tax it as normal when I get the letter.

so when do I do my next MOT after this one , is it Dec 2017 or Feb 2018 ie. end of Feb is when the tax is due.

eg, am I allowed NOT be covered by an MOT for Jan and up til end of Feb 2018?being covered by MOT is not the same as not being covered by tax/insurance right?

Tax it as normal in February and re mot it when it expires in December 2017.
  • You do know that MOT and VED are not linked, right?

You can have a car MOTd every week if you want. The MOT expiry date is printed on the MOT paperwork. Your tax expires when it expires.

When VED runs out, you buy tax. When MOT runs out, you get an MOT. They do not have to get done at the same time.

No, you cannot use your car without either tax, or MOT. It must have both, and both must be valid.

    Jeez.

MOT is valid for 12 months, but if you get one done up to a month before expiry can be valid for 13 months. So Dec 17
Yes to tax as normal in Feb 2017
You need to be covered by an MOT at all times if your vehicle is on the road

    Beaten to it ......
  • OK, thanks for the advice, I will follow it...!!

as for the guy that said 'jeez', I was not sure, that is why I asked, so no need to be obnoxious....

Oh, I'm sorry for answering your question, but also being astonished by the fact that you don't seem to know this already. I mean, it's only written down all over the paperwork you will have for the MOT, the annual VED reminder, the .gov.uk website, etc. It is quite difficult to use Google, too.

This is not exactly complex personal administration.

I've noticed that quite a bit in the motoring forum. It's like you come on here for advice because you don't know and people have a little dig. It puts you off asking sometimes.

UNLESS, his name is Jeez and he was signing off ;)

haha, I know, I was expecting it, that's why I mentioned it - these are not big things we ask, I have used this forum a handful of times about little things I was not sure about, and always got one snarky remark amongst, I must say the majority of helpful straightforward replies....if it was an important thing, I would not ask here....these snarkers are know it alls, and I guarantee I know stuff they don't know too, like everyone - but if I am asked a question, I would reply and not be obnoxious.........now I am off, as I don't live on this forum...and I might be back in a few months when another 'jeez' question pops in to my head!
