Hi guys,

Without givung too much away on a public forum, I recently had a stomach op. (NOT liver) that was cauesed in the main (although no-one can ever be 100% sure) by various periods of drinking over the years. I must stress I am NOT alcohol dependent, never been brethylised/in an accident caused by booze, home/work life not affected, 100% no withdrawal symptoms. No detox ever attended.

I've not had a drink for nearly a month now & don't plan on starting again (pyschological habit-not physical habit-or so Consultant said at hospital).

Now on reading various bits online 'i could' be banned for six months???? My GP has today put on her system 'fit to drive' & my insurance company are aware & say no loading of premium as long as GP says ok to drive. However I've been told I must tell the DVLA (the 'telling them' bit is down to me & not GP-ulness they suspect I've been foolish/reckless & are haevily drinking/driving again).

I'm going to call DVLA tomorrow withiut giving my exact details for an overvies as to what to expect.

Has anyone any experience in this??? I must stress again I'm NOT dependent & have had many months in a row with no booze whatsover. Any help would be great.

The sooner you admit to your drink problem the quicker you can move on.

Fill in form DR1 and send it off to the dvla. They will then decide if you're fit to hold your licence.
  • GTE boy-of course I had a psychological issue with booze-never said I did not!!!!!!

I'm just looking for others who've been in the same situ & the result.

What happened to your old licence? Or, to put it another way, why did you stop driving and how long ago?

Not banned, but your licence withdrawn on medical grounds. Except your doctor says there are no medical grounds.

At the end of the day, you start googling for anything medical, you end up with terminal hypochondria.

Specific cases are always very different, and it's the opinion of YOUR DOCTOR that matters.

    Good luck.

According to your OP you don't have an alcohol problem, and your Dr says you are fit to drive after your op so there was no need to mention this to your insurer or the DVLA
  • Biggles-no licence lost-new picture one received 3 months ago! Quentin-GP & a lady at hospital say I HAVE to inform DVLA....confused.com.

He should have told them upon diagnosis.

Not necessarily - (depends on the diagnosis!). Physical problems following drinking alcohol don't have to be disclosed! Otherwise most of us will have to phone them up next Sunday morning!

But it seems he didn't, and there is now no reason to do so!

Doctors are saying the dvla need to know so they should have been informed at the time.
