Buying Exported Car

Hi,
Im a new driver planning to buy a car. Found one that suits me, but it was Exported. I bought a check to make sure if its ok, and some things im not sure about. I attach info I got so someone could give me an advice. Thank you.

Seller wants £3,300 for it. How much do you think I can haggle down to and is it worth it? What arguments I could use?
See this vehicle:
Reg: SD56VPE, Make: HONDA, Model: Accord

The report says exported in April 2010.

    Look at the MOT history.
Tested Feb 2010. 50,122 miles. Fail on a tyre.
    Retested Feb 2010. Pass.
Tested again March 2010. 51,269 miles.
Why re-test it so soon? Because it was being sold? That ties in with the reg H10DBL being taken off in March 2010. So the buyer exported it - probably to Ireland, since it's RHD.

    Then the next MOT...
    Dec 2015, 99,360 miles.
So it's been re-imported. Fail on a couple of bulbs, and an advisory on a track rod gaiter. Re-tested, pass but still with the advisory.

So, yes, it was exported in April 2010, and returned to the UK in 2015.

Does that make it a car to avoid? <shrug> Why?

  • i just wasn't sure about it. As I said, Im new driver and I didn't really had anything to do with 'car-legal-stuff'.

Can I somehow persuade the seller to do MOT before I buy it or should I do it straight away after purchase?

Also, is it a fair price for that car? Any tips for haggling so I can bring the price down and how much is the most reasonable?

I don't know and most of us on here won't know either without doing some research and in this day and age that really is not too difficult. So go and do some research and you should know within an hour what the ball park figures are.

You can't haggle unless you know what the price should be otherwise how would you know if it was a goo deal or not?

£3,300 for a decade-old unloved fairly large petrol saloon with a £270/year VED bill and no ticket?

    He's having a laugh, frankly.

With a nice clean new ticket...? Doesn't strike me as cheap, but a look on autotrader suggests it's not a million miles off.

    It's this one, isn't it?

15k in the year since the last MOT - and that dealer's been trying to shift it since July, going by the date barely hidden in the autotrader URL... He's clearly using it himself, by the fact it's taxed (which it wouldn't be if it was "in trade") and the mileage in the ad has gone up from 110k to 113k to 114k...

No, the fact it's been exported wouldn't be the biggest turn-off there.

    Yep, thats the one.

He maybed used it, but it doesn't have an MOT at this moment (run out on 6th Dec).

After checking out other similar cars on Autotrader, the average price varies between 2200 and 3500 (for newer and low mileage). Is going for 2500-700 something reasonable? And is that car actually worth it or should I rather look for something else?

I quite like that one for the interior condition, colour and features.

Also, What do you mean by 'no ticket'? Never heard a phrase like that.

Some sites allow you to value cars which they will buy - some buy an car. They will give value of a pristine condition example and you can work out the profit that the dealer is making and ensure he fixes all the issues.

The words "lamb" and "slaughter" spring to mind.

If you are a new driver, have you checked insurance costs?

Accords are generally decent cars but this is old and high mileage with a slightly odd history. It has a good spec but don't be blinded by this. You have to judge on condition, so take somebody sensible with you.

I would rather reign back a bit and go for something with a decent service history and an immaculate MoT history:

    Je suis sabot...
  • I checked the insurance and it would costs me 1600/year with black box so its not bad.

But isnt the advisory bit on last MOT is cheap to repair?

Also, I need to like the visuals. Lets be honest, nobody likes multipla no matter how good condition and how powerful it can be...

Yes, it is. Which makes you wonder why it hasn't been done.
