iphone 6 shuts down in the cold?

my iphone 6 shuts itself down on a cold morning even with 80% or 90% battery left, is there an easy fix for this?
The battery percentage indicator has been a bit erratic for a long time but I've lived with it, tried the reset and also recalibrating to no avail.
Whats causing my iphone to shut down as soon as its used in the cold please?
Was considering having a new battery fitted by our local specialist, might this cure it please?
