when I found a job seven months later, I came out of retirement.
    Just saying.........

It's plausible if you are 55, because that is the age when you can if you wish access your pension. You might indeed have decided to throw in the sponge on losing your job, and decide you might as well retire.
It might depend on the insurer's definition of retired. If it's "not in work and living on one's own resources", then anyone could "retire" at any age. But if it's "not working but drawing income from a pension" then it wouldn't count.
As always, I'm sure the advice would be to get the exact answer from the insurer rather than guessing or hoping.

I've just taken out insurance with AgeUK. It was £70 cheaper than the best on the 4 comparison sites in Martin Lewis' guide and I clicked through the link on this site so should hopefully get. £60 M&S gift voucher. Also they don't charge extra for paying monthly. There are no age restrictions to buying the policy. I paid £199.23.

Might be worth a try for you. I was about to give up and renew my policy with my current provider.
