New house, new huge gas consumption

  • Change supplier. I am fixed to Jan 19. Deal no longer available and no one year deal beats it.

Three bed detached, thermostat timer. 50 to 70 kWh per day this time of year. Toes are warm. Gas and elect currently at £81 per month, though this year is colder than last.

Thank you all for those quotes, I will change.

Is it a problem to change the credit meter to a smart meter with the new supplier?

Ebico are happy to change it for me, I only have to ask them. which I have not done yet.

Shouldn't be a problem to get a smart meter, but until suppliers start installing "SMETS2" standard meters (maybe later next year) it won't be smart if you switch suppliers again.

What is upstairs? If it is simply a hallway with bedrooms / bathrooms off then keeping all the doors closed should be fine. Make sure the loft is well insulated to save heat going through the hall roof.

If it is more open with glass / windows then it could be more of an issue.

Flat out my boiler uses 25p an hour to heat a 4 bedroom house, I don't understand how it is possible to use £13 in a day?

In the same way as a freezer uses less power to keep cold when it is full (of already cold food), a house also takes less power to keep warm when it is full of already warm furniture.
Not quite the same - the idea of keeping the freezer full of stuff is to minimise the amount of air in there which, at least in the case of an upright freezer, will drain out when you open the door and be replaced with room temperature air. I do agree with other replies that you need to get the whole place up to temperature before you can get meaningful Winter running costs.

I remember in the winter of 2009-10 I used a peak of 13 units a day with the heating on 24/7 3 bed detached + conservatory N Scotland, around 146 kWh which would today cost me £2.91............... £13

Flat out, starting at 15C house temperature, my boiler, a Vaillant 837 (32KW I think) used exactly 1 metric unit, about 40p, 2 weeks ago. The next hour it used 0.45 metric units, about 18p. Ended up using 4.88 units for the whole day, about £1.92
Cold 2 bed terrace house, up north, in gods own county :)

You gas charge (per kWh) is at the top end of the scale. 1CM3 is about 11.2kWhs which Is costing me 28p inc VAT. I assume that your £1.92 includes the standing charge and VAT?

  • Calculated wrong!
My 2 year-ish fix with First utility which I have just ended was 2.747/kWh (inc vat) and 21p/day standing charge, So 1 hours gas cost 30.7p inc vat and one days gas use cost £1.48 (plus 21p standing charge).
Now on 33 month fix with Isupply at 2.702/kWh inc vat and 15.5/day standing charge. Could have got cheaper but prefer long term deals.
