Complicated situation

Hello,

I'm a British citizen that has been living abroad for 4 years now, I am recently divorced and moved back to the UK in July of this year and immeditately added myself to the electoral register etc.
I'm back living temporarily at my Mums house and whilst I have no job based income I do recieve monthly spousal support and child maintenance for a fixed period of time through a legal court agreement. It's frustrating because I do actually have a stable, set amount of money coming into my account each month but because I'm not employed I cant apply for finance to build a credit history. I'm planning on moving out and re-entering the workforce once a nursery placement opens up for my baby but in order to move out and get a phone contract, gas and electric supplier, broadband and a car etc I need to have a credit history. How can I do this? Im looking at the Vanquis card application but it's asking for my postcodes from the last 3 years. To be clear, I'd only use a cc for a small purchase and then pay it off in full by the end of the month.

Thanks so much,

  • If anyone will accept you, Vanquis will.
  • How can I apply though when it wants the last three years postcodes? I've only been back in the UK for 6 months. Lived abroad since 2012.
  • Just checked, same with aqua, because I've only lived at current address since July it needs previous address for last 3 years. Does this mean I will not be able to get any credit or finance for another 2 and a half years???
  • I suspect the only way to check this out will be a phone call after the holiday.

You will have a credit history from before you left.
It is unfortunate and somewhat foolish that you closed your bank account and all your credit accounts before you left. You could have kept them open at your Mum's address.
Anyway. your address for the last 4 years has been your Mum's address. The fact that you have not been on the electoral roll for that period will be a negative but if you are on it now that will help.
You are a married woman with a young child. You are being supported by your husband in accordance with a court agreement. That money is presumably being paid into a bank account(?) so there is your income.
Occupation: Housewife (or whatever the correct term is these days). Income: Whatever your husband gives you.
  • Thanks but I only ever had one bank account and I actually kept it open! Child maintenance and alimony aren't considered taxable income.

    Hi.
If you left your UK bank account open while abroad you should have some credit history, for as long as the account was open (unless it was a basic account). Have you tried geting your credit report? Assuming you still have your debit card. Noddle and clearscore are free.

It might well work. But it would be fraudulent to write that since it's not true:

Whatever the OP writes down, she should be consistent if making multiple applications. If things don't tally, she risks a fraud marker at NHunter.

Time builds credit history. With a 4 year void going to take a while to get re-established. Whatever your circumstances.
