If you already have the oil then the process of filling it will tell you the type of engine you have. Just fill to say 2 litres then keep adding half a litre checking the dipstick to see if it is near the upper fill mark.
I wouldn't rely on this method to determine which engine I have!I am not a cat (But my friend is)0 -
Going off topic slightly (from a Golf to an Astra...)
I did the oil change on my sister's MK5 Astra on Xmas Eve for her instead of my wife's since the wrong filter was sent out.
Now on my car, in fact every car i've worked on - MK4 Astra, MK1 Focus, MK4 Golf, MK4 Polo, Corsa C - the oil on the dipstick read the same regardless of which way you put it in.
Now for anyone familiar with the dipstick in a MK5 Astra, same as a MK4 Astra it has notches between the minimum & maximum.
In my sister's MK5 Astra if i insert the dipstick so the notches face in to the car then it reads that only 2 of the 5 notches have oil on them.
If i turn the dipstick around 180 degrees so the notches are facing the front of the car then it reads that all the notches have oil on them (& therefore is filled to the MAX).
A little confusing.
I've told her to go off the highest setting (so notches facing forwards) so at least she doesn't end up OVERfilling it.
Never seen that on the other cars.0 -

I wouldn't rely on it for determining different engines in different cars. But due to the fact he is trying to determine a double ohc with a single ohc engine and the volume of oil is different then its a way of differentiating the two being that we assume all is ok.0 -

Anyway i have myself a Halfords trade card so picked up the proper oil filter when i saw them in there today.
I actually put in 3.5ltr from the off, tested & it was to the max on the dipstick.
Ran it for a while. Turned off, made a brew, came back & re-checked - needed topping up.
Story short it took probably about 4 litres.
So it's above the 3.2 of the DOHC but under the 4.5 of the SOHC.
Since it's almost a litre over the 3.2 i guess then that it's a SOHC.0 -

There should be a sticker, maybe on the belt cover, that will have the engine code on it (three letters). Or if you have the service book they should have put a sticker in the first page that has engine code, paint code, etc on it.
Or call a vw dealer parts dept and give them the reg or vin and ask them.0 -

And just for the record, i did contact VW & ask them. Ok i didn't do it the old fashioned way of telephone but i did email & i did keep it short wher i basically just asked for price of a MAP sensor and the 8v/16v question. They answered the one that involved them possible getting money.0
