XBox One S - just died - first console fail in 20 years...

Options
Well, my 2 month old XBox One S has just died.

Tries to boot up, then after a couple of seconds knocks itself off again.

Microsofts repairs process seems simple enough so i'm sending it off to them tomorrow, but its genuinely the first console failure i've had on an under warranty console in 20 odd years.

Quite disappointing really. But maybe i shouldnt be surprised? Built down to a price perhaps?

There's nothing to indicate the Xbox One S has any cost cutting with its hardware that would impact its reliability and the nature of such complex electronics is that it's near impossible to avoid any failures.

The only console I can remember failing recently is an Xbox 360 S which was the most reliable of the Xbox 360's, I have to chuckle at the fact I never had any issues with a launch 20GB Premium and then an Elite which were the two most unreliable versions.

I had a 360 that was supposed to be a less at risk model. I think it lasted 18 months before it got the ring of death and I am not a heavy user. I have to say though the Microsoft repair service was excellent. It did put me off Xbox though and I only bought one more game for it before switching to PlayStation.

My 360 was purchased November 2007 and is still going.

All electrical items have a failure rate. Of course there are things we can do to cause/contribute towards a failure, but a large extent of it is just luck - whether you get a unit thats inherently faulty or not. But thats why we have consumer rights.

yes but it was a well known design fault of the 360. that is why they were forced to extend the guarantee to 3 years. they rushed it out too quickly to beat the ps3.

    Lol

Actually I'd two for the launch. No issues with either ever.

I think I replaced the odd laser in the original playstaton but no other issues (and those wpuld have been out of warranty)

I Guess the luck you had with them is coming back at you now as there is no known issue with the current gen.

If it's only 2 months old why send it to Microsoft?
Simply take it back to where you got it from and you should get a new one.

You know, I had one of the first XB360's and never had any issues with it, the supposed red ring of death or whatever it was called seemed to pass me by. Even been cooked inside an enclosed cabinet with other AV near it, abused by 10 yr old daughter and son, still no issue. Must say though, when it was time to go, I gave it away, didnt want to risk selling it, even if for a tenner just in case there was any comebacks!

The only requirement for private sales (ie when you are not acting in course of business/your profession) is that you have the right to sell the goods and that it matches its description.

So unless you say something like, its in great working order, will last years etc, you should be fine.
