I would be interested to know how exactly the postcard entries are treated. You are I assume relying on someone to manually inputting them into the system, which leaves room for all kinds of errors.0

I always thought they had to do a Free Option or they're delving into the realms of gambling, which they need a licence for ... with the postal entries, do you need to send them money? or is it just an "answers on a postcard please" type thing?
True, but in this day and age the free option should include online entry as these can be tracked and audited.0 -

They can be scanned or input manually but all the entries are lumped together for selecting a winner.
The claimed accuracy by data handlers who deal with this type of thing is much closer to 100% than 99% - there is probably far more chance of your postcard arriving late or not at all than there being a data error.
There is no requirement to offer a web entry route and the officially sanctioned free entry route is postal (doesn't stop web being offered) as post is supposedly available to all.
From the money making point of view it costs more to handle a postal entry than a web one but there are far fewer free entries made with the postal route and more than enough people switched to the paid route to make it much more profitable - During the year ITV were switching over to postal so not a full years effect their competition revenue increased by £4,000,0000
