Hi,

I received the following email is it genuine and ok to click on links in it?quired: Reconnect Outlook 20!tlook 20!13 to Outlook!.c!om for uninterrupted em
Dear Outlook!.c!om customer,

Earlier this year, Microsoft introduced the new Outlook!.c!om, which provides a business-class email experience to help you stay connected and get more done. Now that you have been upgraded to the new Outlook!.c!om, it’s necessary that you reconnect Outlook 20!16 or Outlook 20!13 to your Outlook!.c!om account. As someone who has an Outlook!.c!om email account connected to a desktop version of Outlook 20!16 or Outlook 20!13, you’re receiving this reminder because you have not yet reconnected your account.

What to do: Reconnect your desktop version of Outlook to your Outlook!.c!om account to ensure uninterrupted email access. If you do not reconnect your account, your Outlook!.c!om emails will soon stop syncing to Outlook 20!16 and Outlook 20!13. Once you reconnect, your Outlook!.c!om emails will resume syncing to your desktop version of Outlook.
For detailed instructions and help on how to reconnect your account, please visit the official Microsoft support web site at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=837697.
Note that this change only affects any Outlook!.c!om accounts you are accessing via Outlook 20!16 or Outlook 20!13; you do not need to reconnect to your other email accounts, such as Office 365, Exchange or other third party email accounts. You can also continue to send, receive and access email from your Outlook!.c!om account on the web via any popular web browser.
We recognise that reconnecting your account is inconvenient, but this step will ensure that you are able to take full advantage of the new Outlook!.c!om over a more secure and reliable infrastructure. If you have any questions not answered by the support article above, please contact customer support at: https://support.office.com/home/chat.
Thank you for being an Outlook!.c!om customer,
The Outlook!.c!om team

FAQs:
Q. What happens if I don’t reconnect Outlook 20!16 or Outlook 20!13 to Outlook!.c!om?
A. Your Outlook!.c!om emails will soon stop syncing to Outlook 20!16 or Outlook 20!13 until you reconnect your account. You will still be able to access your Outlook!.c!om emails via a web browser at any time.
Q. Do I need to reconnect Outlook 20!16 or Outlook 20!13 to any non-Outlook!.c!om accounts (Exchange, Office 365, Gmail, etc.)?
A. No, you only need to reconnect Outlook 20!16 or Outlook 20!13 to your Outlook!.c!om accounts.
Q. Will I lose any emails when I reconnect my account?
A. No, you will not lose any Outlook!.c!om emails when you reconnect your account. Your email and calendar data remain accessible via the web. Once you reconnect, your Outlook!.c!om emails and calendar data will resume syncing to your desktop version of Outlook.
Q. Where can I get help if I have trouble reconnecting Outlook 20!16 or Outlook 20!13 to my Outlook!.c!om account?
A. For detailed step-by-step instructions, please refer to the help article at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=837697. If you have any questions not answered by the support article above, please contact customer support at https://support.office.com/home/chat.

I now use office 2013 mail client on windows 7 and just want to be able to send and receive email as normal preferably without doing anything, if I don't do as above will I be ok?

Thanks

  • It's not a genuine message. Have you literally copied and pasted it?

There are grammar and spelling mistakes in there. Also check the email address of the sender.

Tip: never click on links in email where you input personal information! Even genuine looking emails as some email scammers can be quite convincing. This one is definitely not convincing!

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.
  • Here is the same information on the office.com wesbite https://support.office.com/en-gb/article/Reconnect-Outlook-2016-or-Outlook-2013-to-Outlook-com-for-uninterrupted-email-access-cda1751d-9503-40bf-bf76-e79454ac5eb3?ui=en-US&rs=en-GB&ad=GB

The links in the email posted above are all valid Microsoft links. Where the spurious exclamation marks came from when the OP cut and pasted I can't say.

The text may be all genuine MS links but without hovering the cursor over them in the original and checking where they actually go you can't be certain. It may or may not be genuine - I haven't read it through and don't have the original to check.

Example of misleading link - https://www.google,co.uk

    Absolutely.

And the big giveaway is a non-genuine MS email as the sender. Check the sender's email address and if it's suspicious, it's not genuine.

I got it as well (I do use Outlook 2013) and it looked genuine to me. The sender is Outlook <outlook@email2.office.com>.

"Dear Outlook!.c!om customer" should be "Dear Outlook.com customer" btw.
  • Thanks for all replies, appreciated.

As I say I use office 2013 to receive and send email.

If I do nothing at all about reconnecting accounts or whatever they are on about, will my office 2013 email still work ok?
    Thanks

It is unfortunate that you didn't check. The html from the email has been carried across when it was cut and pasted and converted into forum code, so the anchor tags are preserved in the OP and you could have checked them. But you didn't. If you hovered over the links in the OP you would see they do indeed point to somewhere other that where the displayed text says - to the click.email2.office.com domain, which since it is a subdomain of office.com, is a legitimate one.

There was a recent thread here about this same subject. It is genuine. I got the same email (back then) ... as of now I haven't done anything about it, but MS Outlook (programme) still connects fine to my Hotmail account.
