We accepted an offer on our house 2 weeks ago and the surveyor is here at the moment, it's just a basic survey does anyone know the kind of things they will be looking for?

Good question...
Some of them literally just knock on the door and have a look around the outside. Some of them just have a casual drive by and pretend that they have been inside. However, you will get the odd one that tests electrical sockets, windows, have a full walk around outside, check the loft, etc.
TBH I am a solicitor and doing anything less than a full structural survey is a waste of time. The homebuyers basically consists of the surveyor walking around the house and identifying any problems and recommending that they are looked at or fixed. You can, of course, spot these items yourself.
I would imagine that if other houses have sold for a similar price in your area then there will be no problem, however, you can never be 100 percent sure.0 -

Yes, it depends on the level of survey they are conducting. The kind of thing they will look out for is age/condition of boiler, signs of movement in the walls, signs of damp, indicators of state of the electrics (though they will just recommend a electrics specialist looks at those on the whole).0

Or, to be less of a smart4ss
- any major and minor faults and the cost implications of these.
- damp in the walls and woodwork,woodworm, damp-proofing, insulation and drainage (not tested; nor willthe electrics or boiler be).
- maybe rebuild costs for insurance purposes.
-any further surveys and investigations that may needed.

ie, nothing to worry about. I am not teckky but I could do most of that, and say- get the electrics and boiler tested which is all they'll do, I bet they don't even ift carpets or look in the loft0 -
Thanks for the replies, I only posted cause he was here for a while and seemed to be checking everything! Basic survey just made me think it would be 15-20 mins (its only a 2 up 2 down terrace). He was an hour overall, it sounded like he may have looked under the carpets upstairs and he went into the loft too, he seemed very thorough, was taking notes the whole time and asked loads of questions. Hopefully they were all normal questions as I can't see that there would be anything in such a small house that we could have missed that desperately needs doing.
Got to wait till after Christmas now till the buyer gets he report so keeping my fingers crossed!0 -

:rotfl: this was the first thing I did but there was so much variation I just wanted people's experiences, what they say they do and what they do can be two very different things!0 -

Whether you supply biscuits.
Whether the washing up's been done and the beds made.
