Rant: Why is Car Insurance so expensive and forms so intrusive these days?
I am finding the process of getting car insurance extremely arduous and intrusive these days.
On average all the good car companies have their insurance at £1,000 or above.
I don't have a fancy car nor do I have any motoring convictions, never made any claims and I don't live in a dump-hole yet it is high.
On top of that they ask fairly intrusive questions in those long forms, I know it's meant to help them adjust the price (supposedly) but so much of it is un-necessary.
I missed my renewal date by 1 days and the difference between renewal quote and now a new one is £350. Insane.
These insurance companies seem to be price fixing.

Why do you think there is price fixing?
Every time I get a quote there are dozens of companies with prices varying by upwards of 100%. (I pay £430-ish currently but some quoted £900+).
It's actually one of the most competitive markets in the UK. Can you think of anything else you buy where there are so many potential suppliers and varying prices?0 -

Ouch, that's more than twice what I pay.0 -
.... they ask fairly intrusive questions in those long forms, I know it's meant to help them adjust the price (supposedly) but so much of it is un-necessary....
Previously it was up to us to volunteer anything that was relevant to getting the cover (and they could reject claims if something was considered relevant that hadn't been disclosed to them - "utmost good faith")
Now we don't have to worry about what we should tell them - they must ask us the questions they consider relevant, and we do not need tell them anything else at all, and as long as you answer truthfully they cannot accuse you of deliberately withholding anything to get a cheaper premium, and cannot use something else they find out about you against you (if they never asked in the first place)0 -

You are probably young.
I'm old and drive a modified fancy car and pay around 200 quid all mods declared. I have just renewed the insurance on my modified 4x4 at just over £100 fully comp.0 -

And from previous posts, he might not live in a "dump-hole" but he does live in London.0 -

You'll very often find that a quote for "now" is a lot higher than one for a couple of weeks in the future, even from the same company. I assume it's because they know you need it so are less inclined to be competitive at short notice.Every time I get a quote there are dozens of companies with prices varying by upwards of 100%.
