My wife had to renew her insurance, in the last year we sold our house & are now renting. The premium went up by £6.06p, she also changed mileage as she is further from work etc so it was a bit more of a hike than just that. Whilst on the phone to the new insurers she asked why is their an increase in premium due to being a homeowner or a tenant?

She was told that its deemed that Homeowners are more responsible due to committing to buy a house & tenants are considered more of a risk...She replied how we had been homeowners not "Buyers" for the past 7 years prior to taking this temporary tenancy & did this apply to people as us who were not "home buyers" but owners who had paid off the mortgage?

Apparently there was a pregnant silence & a supervisor came on & after a similar conversation the insurance rate was dropped by £10.

My wife thanked them & told them to keep the £10 as she would rather be classed a someone Risky(read Risque ) as she found that quite flattering at her age ...

ps:wife did not like my comment...on naughty step...

They just make it up as they go along. Lies, dammed lies, and insurance statistics.

You think the person in the call centre has access to all the actuarial data that goes into calculating a premium and the knowledge to answer questions about it accurately?

If they did, they wouldn't be working in a call centre ;)

Maybe they're friends with someone with that access.

I think it would have been an entirely reasonable enquiry to an Insurance company..."Amazingly" the supervisor appeared to know...unless they were lying, after all, they are only "Call center Staff"...:(

It is indeed an entirely reasonable question.

However, it is also entirely reasonable for the insurance company not to answer. Their actuarial data and decisions are commercially sensitive.
