Work van broken down. Which recovery company should I join?

Hi all

Hoping someone can help. The van i own and use for work has broken down and needs recovering so i can get it in the garage. I have no problem joining and paying for either AA, RAC, Green Flag etc but I think I might need a special membership. Yes, i could easilly join up at the AA Stall that is inside the entrance of my local Tesco but the reason i am asking here is because of the following:
1: I want this policy to cover multiple vehicles, such as my car, my wifes car, my other 2 vans. Therefore, I think I may need a policy that is specific to me and not a particular vehicle.
2. Last year on this very site I seem to recall a deal where it was virtually free (Taking into account cashback etc) to Join one of the big boy breakdown companies.

I know i could go on price comparison sites etc but I think I may potentially miss a deal, discount or voucher etc.

Any suggestions please?

Thanks in advance.

You won't be able to join today at normal rates and get it recovered!

Read up the MSE guide to breakdown recovery to find the best deals for your circs.

Read the T&Cs carefully for criteria around the size of Vans that can be covered. We have a car, a van and a motorbike. The van is too large for the RAC's policy but is fine with AA and Green Flag, for example.

Edit - gardner1 typed faster than me! :)

    1) As far as vans go, they do only cover "car derived vans".

    2) Since they sold out to RCIB earlier this year their previous good reputation no longer counts! (Check out RCIB here and across the web to learn of their poor reputation)

Who services the van? The company we had a service contract with organised recovery.

It might be cheaper if you get the garage to recover and then buy a policy separately

They do but depends on the size, see below.

Yes but that can be the equivalent of a people carrier, e.g.
    Vauxhall Combo

    Nissan

From page 7 of the Autoaid policy document:-

"The vehicle / your vehicle – a saloon car, hatchback, estate car, car derived van or motorcycle over 150 cc's. Motorised caravans can be covered provided they are under 2.5 tons gross vehicle weight and with an engine capacity of no more than 2500 cc, which is being driven by either you, or your legal spouse or civil partner."

I have had a policy with them for a few years and had to use them for the first time 2 weeks ago, no problem whatsoever and they now do not need payment at the roadside, Autoaid settle it with the garage.

Unless it's changed recently, personal RAC membership excludes vehicles "used for business". They will sell you a fleet membership covering all your vehicles for any driver.

I imagine the AA will be similar - they usually are.

This point needs reiterating. You can't join any of them to cover an already broken-down vehicle. Most of the breakdown companies have a fixed fee to come out to a non-member, eg:
If you’re not a member of Green Flag but you need our help, don't worry – we’re happy to help. Just call us on 0800 051 0636 and for £108 we’ll send one of our engineers to either repair your car at the roadside or take you to a local garage.

    https://www.greenflag.com/contact-us

However, this may well exclude commercial vehicles - you'd have to ask them.

Get it repaired, then get breakdown cover for it.
