PIP age limits?

How old can you be to still get PIP? I'm asking as a relative of mine has, over the last few months been reduced to a shell of the man he once was (and yes diagnosed medical condition underlying this) and it will continue beyond the 3 (or is it 6) month limit?
But he turns 65 in March so if he applied now, and went through the stressful application process, would it be over before it began?

Thank you in advance

Anyone who is on PIP before they reach State Pension age, and continue to meet the other criteria, will continue to receive PIP after pension age.

Will an individual in the situation outlined by the OP i.e. approaching 65, need to have been assessed by their 65th birthday to qualify or will the application alone be sufficient?

Everything I've read says you have to claim before 65.
  • It's definitely the date of application that counts. Any award will be backdated to the date of application. If he leaves applying till he reaches 65 he would have to apply for attendance allowance which is less generous than PIP as it has no mobility component.

There is no age limit for PiP, my neighbour is in the application process and she is 66.

  • I'm sorry but there is. There is a confusing group of people who already get dla and need to apply for pip even though they are over 65. It's all to do with the transition from dla to pip. But for new applicants the age limit is 65 and assleepless pointed out always worth
apllying before as there is a chance of getting the mobility element. The approach for attendance allowance is diffferent and it does seem a bit easier to get, so if turned down for pip always worth applying for a once they are 65

Okay. My neighbour was approaching the age of 66 when she received the PiP letter. Before that she was getting DLA, when she contacted the DWP about applying for attendance allowance she was told that that was being phased out and that she would just continue to get DLA. So imagine her shock when she got the PiP letter!
As you say it's not something straightforward!
People really don't know what to expect.:(

Just wondering. Are the people who are over 65 and get turned down for PiP able to apply for attendance allowance?

    Yes.

People who are turned down for PIP can appeal and then make a new claim for PIP if they wish.

So people who do not meet the age criteria having been turned down for PIP can then apply for AA.

However, it would usually be for a worsening/new condition and remember that AA has no mobility component.

the cut off date for PIP transfers was april 2013.
anyone under the age of 65 and claiming DLA on that date is required to transfer to PIP.

those already 65 on that date and receiving DLA will continue with their DLA claim.

attendance allowance is not being phased out ... DLA is for people of working age
