Is it a hard water area?
If it is there is a chance the E7 immersion heater could have blown after 10-14years due to a build up of scale up over the element and then it overheats.
I think thermostats failing tend not to blow fuses/trips, they either go open circuit no heat or closed circuit heat all the time, are easy to test and replace.
The heater elements do break short circuit/earth and that is another easy test.0 -

As above my guess the real problem was the E7 element had blown.
That's a drain and replace if you can get it our without damaging the cylinder.
thermostat is a £10 10min fix(+ travel time if you don't have one in your van)0 -
Should add a broken thermostat can accelerate element failure.0
