Question RE no spend days....is that no spending on groceries, or no no money spent *at all*?
All my NSDs are for things I cover in my grocery budget; food, toiletries, cleaning and laundry products.

There is a thread on here that is for totally spend free days - can't remember the name but someone else may be able to help :D

Hi, I've not done the grocery challenge for a while, but since my husband passed away in July I need to cut back where I can, so I am going to start doing it again from 1st January, when I will be going for £100. I have quite a lot of food in the cupboards, fridge and freezer, so I will try to use as much of that up as I can.

Gorgeous hubby spent £3.75 on bread, milk and fresh veg today. Will last us well into next week so still have £76.25 of budget left. Will have to spend a few pounds on rice tomorrow though.

I am not moaning though after having those four NSD's. Didnt spend a single penny, yay us!!

Coxy So sorry to hear of your loss. Would you like any help with running the thread? Hugs x

I'd like to join this month. It is tough to choose a budget though. Part of me wants to say £10 as we usually eat from the storecupboard and freezer for the month. On the other hand we are due to meal plan batch cook 4 months worth of meals so we might need to get some ingredients.
I'll go for £80 for the month to include toiletries and cleaning products.

    Shock - horror

I've just added up how much I spent on food, cleaning, toiletries for 2016 and it came in at a whopping £5031.15p it's not that we are a large family anymore - just the two of us plus a dog. I don't know if I feel embarrassed or ashamed - what a waste of money - it has got to change. :(:o

On my wishlist for 2017 is hoping for more sense
  • Hi coxy, I hope the funeral went as well as these things can.

Redshank, I declare NSDs in the grocery challenge as grocery NSDs, so it is not buying anything that is covered by my grocery budget.

I'm the same freyasmum, homemade bread is pointless for me to save money with because I eat half the loaf fresh out of the oven.

I have a question for you lovely lot! I have a bunch of noodles in the cupboard because the boy isn't a stir fry fan and so we hardly ever have it. He eats almost everything and has a healthy diet, so if he's not a stir fry fan I don't think that I need to force it on him. I'm not a big Chinese food fan anyway. So what else can I use the noodles for? Any ideas?

  • Hi all

I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and is looking forward to a prosperous, fun-filled 2017!

I fell off the GC challenge with a real bump over the past few months, and my spending in December has been shocking in general. I really need to get a grip on it now, as I have just been burrning through money on taxis, nights out and eating out.

I'm hoping to get back on track in January! My month will be pretty short, starting on 03/01 (when I return home from family visits) and ending on 25/01, so I'll set myself a smaller-than-usual budget of £100.

For every other month of the year, I'll be setting myself a budget of around £160, which is enough for me to eat really well on.
    2025 goals
    GC: April £100
Savings: save £6K (or move house)
    Health: Lose 3 stone
Mind: read at least 24 books

I think that you should feel proud that you have made the connection and want to spend your money more constructively. It's easily done. Stocktake and mealplan and see how many meals you can make from what you have and just buy the odd accompanyment to go with things - good luck.

You could use for spag bol, just to use them up, or toss in a salad. Have as a side dish, instead of potato in a meal, like meat 2 veg and noodles or something. You could make a healthier version of pot noodles maybe.
