Anyone help with paragraphs?

I'm pretty new to forums and have tried to read all the FAQ's and help section but haven't found any answers to my problem...When I type in a paragraph on my post, it doesn't appear when a submit. The text just all closes up.Also none of the text buttons on the top of the 'message box' appear to work, I can't center text or underscore etc. And as for the smilies well, I've changed the settings in User CP but can't get anything to work right. Sorry if I sound abit thick, I'm not, honest!!I'm using Windows XP and Internet Explorer, could some of those settings need adjusting?(I've put paragraphs in here, but don't suppose they'll show)!
Oh my god - the smilie worked on preview but not the paragraphs!!

Try using Firefox instead of IE. The site seems to work better for some reason beyond my knowledge!0

Anyone familiar with the problem that means it keeps starting new lines for no reason?
