What does task manager report is actually using these cpu cycles ?

You have scanned for malware, right ?

Scan for malware every week using malwarebytes & ADWcleaner
    so no problems there.

Sorted the update hang after about a week of faffing about.
    Thanks for all the help.

Are you going to share the fix to help others in a similar situation ?

I would share what I did with pleasure if I could remember what I did.
It was something to do with this update
    Update for Windows (KB3172605)
But there was a recommendation to download it from IE it never worked downloading with Firefox.

Yup -- that's one of the hotfixes I referred to above as a prerequisite for the latest version of Windows Update.

Why not look at Novatech motherboard upgrade bundles https://www.novatech.co.uk/motherboardbundles/- any will make a significant difference
    compare performance at http://cpuboss.com/
They are a lot simpler to deal with than messing around - fitting CPU's, memory etc

Looking to upgrade my Intel Pentium E5300 CPU.
Getting confused by what I could upgrade to !!
Can any of you techno's point me in the right direction ??
As this is MSE I dont want to spend loads of money !!
    :D:D

The E5300 comes from a large family of CPU's when Intel was making them very upgradable, called LGA775

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_775

They covered a lot of brand names from Celeron, Pentium and Core2 Duo

Now if you are going to upgrade you probably want to go to Core2 Duo Quad core but you might want to avoid the fastest models because they always carry a premium.

Below is a list of CPU's in the Core2 family but your motherboard may not support them all

What will determine the fastest one you can get is your motherboard BIOS and the speed of FSB (Front Side Bus) it supports, It will be displayed in your bios or you can google it The 5300 is only 800 MHz FSB, so you may have a low end board that may not support more than 800Mhz, on the other hand if you had a board like the Gigavyte GA-G33M-DS2R it would list that it supports 800, 1066 and 1333
    1. Supports Intel® Core™2 Extreme/ Core2™ Quad / Core™2 Duo / Intel® Pentium® Extreme/ Intel® Pentium® D processor
    2. Supports 1333/1066/800 MHz FSB

    http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2534#sp

There are some that support 1600 too.

So you check what your motherboard can support then go here to find the fastest at that speed here

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors

Here are the Intel pages for

    Core 2 duo

    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/processors/000006005.html

    Intel® Core 2 Quad

    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/processors/000005957.html

    and

    Core™2 Extreme

    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/processors/000007328.html

For example If it supports 1333 you might get the Intel-Core2-Quad-Q9650

If you compare the actual benchmarks here it would be quite a bit faster but also use a lot more power so your energy bills would be higher. e.g. Pentium E5300 @ 2,677 Core2 Quad Q9650 @ 5,901

    http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Pentium-E5300-vs-Intel-Core2-Quad-Q9650

Now the thing to understand about CPU development is what changed between LGA775 and the current families of CoreI I3, I5 and I7. In simple terms the silicon wafer got thinner so the CPU's are able to deliver more power for less voltage. When you compare CPU's on CPUboss it will call it the "Manufacture process" You might see 65nm or 45nm on these older CPU's while todays CPU's are typically say 14nm, so they run cooler and use less power for similar performance.

Also modern ones typically include a GPU on the chip so graphics benchmarks might be 3x faster.

When you improve the CPU you may hightlight the problem of low memory, for example Win7 started off needing 2gb but now it needs 4gb minimum and does well with 8gb but that DDR2 memory costs 4 or 5 times as much as DDR3 and the motherboards of old PC's can only go to say 8gb if you are lucky (some to 4gb) while modern motherboards might go to 16gb or 32gb.

With modern budget motherboards costing from £30, cheap DDR3 memory from about £25 and adequate budget CPU's running at lower temperatures using less power but feeling faster because of combination of speed and graphics, I am not sure I would still invest in a LGA775 rig.

The fact is that there are plenty that will, so best option is to buy new kit (which may be a reconditioned system unit for around £140 or a motherboard, CPU and Ram combination, then sell your old rig, or break it up, the ram is very sought after if you have 4gb modules.
Thanks, don't you just hate people with sigs !
