Upgrade CPU
Comments
-
You guys haven't asked the OP one of the key questions here - why is he looking to upgrade this CPU?
Is it because he often uses CPU intensive programs?
Upgrading to an SSD will increase boot times and program startup/load times etc, but it won't help with CPU intensive tasks.
Please ask the important questions first.0 -
I am upgrading the CPU because when I look in Task Manager I can see that the CPU usage is running around the 60% mark & quite a lot of the time hitting 100%.
Even with just looking at MSE it is around the 55% mark.
I dont seem to be able to reduce the CPU usage so thought an upgrade might be the way to go ??

Your problem would seem to be high CPU usage, not low CPU performance. My i3 M380 @2.53GHz generally sits around 10 - 20% during "normal" use. You need to look at what is using that amount of CPU. Is your Windows updating OK, that is a high CPU user if it is stuck.firefox1956 wrote: »I am upgrading the CPU because when I look in Task Manager I can see that the CPU usage is running around the 60% mark & quite a lot of the time hitting 100%.

It worth upgrade it to quad core.
I used to have E6300, there is a significant improvement when I upgrade to Q9550.
Regarding the update, have you try leave it on overnight?0 -
Yes left the update running for 14 hours !
Still nothing......also tried the various Google fixes for 'update hangs' but nothing seems to get them.0 -
What does task manager report is actually using these cpu cycles ?
You have scanned for malware, right ?0 -
There's a new windows update troubleshooter.firefox1956 wrote: »Windows update is turned off so that cant be running.

Sorry, not tested by me so may be same old stuff with a new front.
I think upgrading the CPU is a cheap -good experience- upgrade to try. ASSUMING its not malware; also show us a printout of task manger -> Details -> order on CPU; plenty disk space, memory? Which OS? 10 is easy to reinstall.0 -

You might be able to fix that by installing the latest version of Windows Update and its prerequisites as described here (posts 6 and 9):
