I signed up on the back of this thread and can't make head nor tail. DH is weekly paid and although the Q&A's say you can adjust it for weekly or fortnightly paid, it still doesn't make sense. I tried to enter a new category but it ended up in the wrong place.

I'm going to wait until I have the house to myself and listen to some of the online help thingies.

It's called Friendly You Need A Budget - it's a closed group so you have to wait to be accepted
  • Thanks louby will take a look.

Greengnome I am the least technical person ever and I adore YNAB. Watch the tutorials on YouTube. And then watch them again with the site open to do things as you are watching. I have the ap on my phone which I actually find easier for day to day stuff and only use the full site when I get my main money as it has to be put against the next month's bills which cannot be accessed on the app.

I get 'paid' five times a month, I worked out which 'pay' would go against which bills in my diary (one pay is four weekly, some monthly) for the first month then did it on the site. Now I have a good idea which bills need to be put against which pay etc which makes it a lot easier.

It definitely isn't for everyone, but I am beyond useless at spreadsheets but I know a lot of people prefer that type of budgeting.

I honestly wasn't convinced for about a week, played about with it, inputted my first 'pay' and downloaded the app and then I was totally sold!

    Good luck.

I am trying it out but finding it very annoying that it's impossible to link in any way to UK accounts... *sigh*

That means it's no more use to me than my current budgets which is a shame as I LOVE a good app... LOL

You can't link it to UK bank accounts.

You just input your salary and assign your ££ to the different categories. The idea is that you budget the money you have so that you £0 at the top.

    Which aspect don't you understand?

For me it's like having a load of envelopes and when you get paid you allocate some money to each envelope ready and waiting.

When you've done your food shopping for the week you tell YNAB that you're taking £52.34 out of the £200 you've set aside for food.

You go out for a meal and it comes to £24.50 you tell YNAB that you've spent that out of your £100 eating out budget...and so on.

Well thats the same as Classic YNAB which is fine.
But nYnab doesn't allow you to forecast which is a pita.

OH paid every 4 weeks, I'm paid monthly, child benefit is every 4 weeks and then student finance is 3 times a year. It doesn't allow me to budget the student finance appropriately, it wants me to spend it once I have it. With old ynab, I can look 4 months ahead to see what impact my budget will have now. Ie, can i put £500 from student finance into savings or will that screw it up 4 months down the line. Whereas the new one wants me to just budget month on month. Our income changes every month and I just don't feel like it works well with that
    Money money money.

I've only ever used the new YNAB so I can't comment about the old one.

I know a lot of people have struggled with the transition. It works for me, it took a while but I love it now.
