iPhone repair

I have had my Apple iPhone 5S for just over 2 years after having it as a 48th birthday present. In that time it has always been kept in a metal case which has a screen protector and this is all held together with 6 screws. My iPhone has never been subjected to knocks or drops and has always been looked after.

The battery for the last 5 or 6 months has sometimes been lasting for half a day and a battery app indicated that the battery was indeed faulty. As it was out of warranty and now wanting to pay Apple's high pries (which in hindsight I wish I had) I shopped around and found that Timpsons had the best deal at £20.00 with a 12 month warranty.

Timpsons fitted the battery and advised it would need a full charge. I paid my £20.00 and left. After charging the battery I found that the home button no longer worked although it did click when pressed. I returned my iPhone to Timpsons and the same technical took it apart and was scratching his head before saying that he would have to send it to Timpsons Repair Centre. I was also advised that Timpsons would accept full responsibility. I collected my iPhone a few days later and the home button was still not working so it was returned again. I since managed to get the number of their repair centre and spoke to a lady who advised that a lot of components were damaged in the phone when the battery was replaced!

As I do not know what has happened to my iPhone or what damage has been caused or how it will preform in the future, what are my rights here? Could I request a replacement phone or would Timpson's be insured against damage like this?

As they appear to have accepted responsibility for the damage done to your phone and agreed to fit the battery, then they need to put you back in the position you were prior to the damage. They may offer money to pay for a repair or the replacement value of a 2 year old iphone 5s. If it is just the home button not working you could put the button on the screen and use it via that way until you get it repaired, if you are offered and accept repair costs.

They probably broke the ribbon cable from the home button to the top screen, common error if not aware. The cable is short and if you open the top too much without disconnecting it.....there goes your home button...they would have had to do this to change the battery.

Cheap enough fix, negotiate then fix it yourself :-)

I've just gone into my local Timpsons and asked for a quote on an iphone 6S cracked screen replacement. The screen is cracked, but the LCD still works fine. They've quoted me £145, which is higher than the local Apple store quote at £136. Why would I pay Timpsons more than the Apple store?! Rip off.

now you are in a situation as even if Timpson gives you the money to go get it repaired, even though it is out of warranty and you will need a paid repair Apple will not carry out any repair as it have been tampered with by a third party

I agree. Just get it repaired by Apple.

Not a rip off though. You are free to choose whichever repairer suits you.

With iPhones, the glass screen / digitizer / lcd are bonded together as one unit. When you have your 'screen' replaced either at a place like Timpsons / Apple / high street repair 'specialist' they all replace the entire bonded unit.

HOWEVER. most non-Apple repair shops use cheap non-Apple pattern-part replacement units. These are generally perfectly good, however their cost is only about £30 each when bought in small bulk. They can be bought individually on eBay for as little as £35 each. The reason I mention this is that most non Apple repairers can make a big mark-up on screen repairs by charging a price that is (usually) just a bit cheaper than what Apple charge.

So, if a high street repairer is charging for example £120 to replace a screen, then before allowing for staff time, rent, tax, etc they are making £80 on the repair. Or to put it another way, when you see some corner-shop type repairers charging just £60 to replace an iPhone 6 screen....the repairer is actually making around 100% mark up.

Changing an iPhone screen might sound like a skilled job but in reality it is relatively simple with just a little training or a YouTube tutorial for the first timers, and will take about 10-15 minutes only.
