3kw kettle using less electricity than a 2 kW kettle

My cheepo 2kW Tesco kettle blew up so I bought a new 3kW kettle and found that it actually uses less electricity overall than my old kettle.

Using a plug in energy monitor the old kettle used about 996 watts of electricity a day and the new one uses 808 watts of electricity a day.

This is because when heating water for a couple of mugs of coffee with the old kettle it took so long to boil that I wouldn't stand watching it and when it boiled by the time I got back to it I always switched it back on again to bring it to the boil before pouring it in the mugs.

The new kettle takes less time to boil the water for a couple of mugs of coffee and that is just over the time it takes me to get the mugs and spoon the coffee in them so I don't wander away or do something else.

It also takes less time to boil a full kettle of water for a pot of tea.

The new kettle also switches off when I remove it from it's base so the second it starts bubbling I lift it from it's base and make the coffee.

So saving about £6 a year on electricity.

Not the most convincing scientific experiment(or conclusion) I have ever seen;)
  • Say .. ... .... 3kW x 12pkWh = 37p ÷ 20 [the three minutes to switch off] = 1.85p. It's probably ± ≈ to the 2kW kettle with the same volume of water also on immediate switch off at boil, although age related lime-scaling on the older 2kW element might reduce its efficiency.

    What lime scale?

    Not everyone lives in England.

    No?

It wasn't a scientific experiment, it was an observation.

    12pkWh

9.72p kWh is what I am paying SG

  • My 12p was just an example, everyone might be different, just replace my 12p with your 9.72p for the calculation to be accurate. Not everyone lives in a limescale area, everyone might be different, just choose your personal circumstances my friend.

So the old kettle would be left to boil until it switched off then re boiled but the new kettle is removed from its base the second it starts bubbling. If you did the same with two identical kettles one would use less electricity.
It should take less time to boil. Its using 50% more electricity.

But I'm not comparing 2 identical kettles, am I?

The reason I am using less electricity is because I bought a new 3 kW kettle.

If I had bought a new 2 kW kettle I would not be using less electricity, would I? because I would be using it in the same way as the old kettle.
