Switching early

Hi,

According to my 'Welcome to BT Broadband' email, I joined on 14th Jan 2016 (12 month contract). I want to switch to another provider (been quite happy with BT but want to make it cheaper).

Can I switch now without incurring any fines? Also will that mean I'm paying twice until the 14th Jan?

I guess I can wait until then but want to take advantage of the Origin broadband deal (which ends Jan 5th).

Alternatively can I pay to switch now but have the switch not activate until Jan 14th?

I've got a similar query with Car insurance too but not done my research yet and that change happens on boxing day so probably well within acceptable switchover period.

Thanks

A broadband switch is not instant and with the Christmas period you may not get the actual switch until 2017 .
You pay your current BT contract until its due date of 14th Jan 2017 .
Best is to start the switch now and if you are on the new service before your BT contract expires then its not going to be many days you are paying off your BT contract .
But also worth phoning BT and asking can they match the offer you have .
  • Thanks. Gonna do that. I double checked with BT and they said I'm ok to switch now. Some overlap is ok I guess, if that happens.

I would start the switch the day before the deal ends, and keep your fingers crossed that BT don't hit you for it.

It's a fine line with BT. Wait too long and prices rocket. Go too early and its possible it could cost you.

Ask your new provider how long switches typically take.
    I reckon 14 days.

Insurance it much easier. You can sort it typically 30 days in advance. You just tell them, what day you want it to start on.
