In North America, service providers rarely give assistance or compensation when things go wrong, especially if it wasn't their fault. This is because consumer protection laws are generally weak, and are the responsibility of each State. Air travel between different States or internationally comes under US Federal authority, so you have virtually no recourse in US law.
Also, American culture is very strong on self-reliance, so Americans generally don't expect help from anyone, least of all a corporation.0
