life of a fridge freezer

We bought our Smeg fridge freezer in 1998. It was a graded model as that was the only way we could afford one back then
Eighteen years on and three long distance house moves later, it has had a few shelf supports break and we'll replace it when we move again (probably in 2017), but generally speaking it's still in good working order.

I tend to find that I've done one of the things mentioned before they go wrong.0 -
Thanks for all your opinions so would you expect a expensive make to last longer than a cheaper make. Or do you feel its just paying for the name0

My mum bought us a F/F for a wedding present 32½ years ago.
It was moved to the garage when we moved house after 3 years as we bought a bigger one.
It was moved again to the garage when we moved house 8 years ago.
It's a rusty as B** on the outside, but still works fine.0 -
I would expect more expensive ones from more reputable makers to be better designed, more efficient use of space, better quality plastic bits, quieter, better features, etc. I wouldn't pay extra expecting it to last longer as they all last quite well, as long as you're not unlucky or heavy handed.
If you want the best then go for Leibherr.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0 -
The basics fails are cheap and easy to fix once you understand the basics..
circuit boards often mean scrap unless you can find a cheap one.
Our Samsung display board went(turned the machine off without warning) but turns out you can just disconnect it and the machine works fine.
I would expect at least 10years from any F/F product0 -
Apparently it really is important to defrost regularly if you want them to last. Though I guess many/most have auto-defrost heaters now.0

Yes, indeed. We defrost ours every time we move house ... is that OK?0
