life of a fridge freezer

Hi guys just really after your thoughts really how long would you expect a FF to last before it has a appointment with the scrap man.

  • I don't have a combi, but my Zanussi freezer is still going after 17 years, and the previous Hotpoint one lasted 12 years. The fridge is about 3years old, but the last one was still going after 43 years. I chucked it out when the door seal was started leaking as it was costing a fortune.

Usually until you get fed up with them, want a different sort or can't be bothered to move them when you move house.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

If they get over 5 years old & break down I just chuck them.
Never really worth repairing after that,
Having said that I have had dishwashers / washing machines etc that have lasted
    15 years or more.
    My opinion only though.

    I have a Zanussi Freezone since 1997.

Needs to be defrosted (not a frost free model) more now, but still going strong!

Ah they made em better in the old days alright!

Getting a new kitchen next year all going well, so will have to replace it I reckon....sadly, but it's a bit battered and worn as you can imagine.

Most of them don't. Having said that nowadays they get so complicated with timers, heaters, multiple fans, display panels, ice makers, solenoid valves, etc that I suppose they're not as reliable as they used to be.
Freezers were the appliance I used to see least when I was working, they don't shake about & they're not easy to abuse like other appliances.

I last had the kitchen done in 1997. I got a new fridge freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, oven and ceramic hob.

Believe it or not every single item is going strong and I have NEVER had to have them repaired.

I suppose that puts the kibosh on them now lol.

But that is really amazing isn't it? And I am really telling the truth here honestly.

Now that I hope to get a new kitchen and appliances.... I wonder how longthe next lot will last!

The legally 'reasonable' time they should last is, I believe, 6 years. This because they are a consumer durable.

Mind you, if mine only lasted that long, I'd be unhappy. Like others here, I've had 15-20 years.

I've found it's usually the plasticky bits that break first - drawer fronts, shelf supports, seals, etc. Not catastrophic but enough to warrant a replacement.

There is no stipulated time that any consumer goods are expected to last, only a time within which you can take legal action against a retailer if you think that goods have failed too early in their life (and this period is 6 years in England).

This doesn't mean that any consumer goods are automatically expected to last this length of time as their durability can take factors such as price, they way and the number of times they have been used.
