Gers, I had a friend who moved to an island in the Outer Hebrides. The first Christmas she was there she went to a Christmas service. She was used to churches decorated, lit by candles, beautiful music and everything very atmospheric.
What she got was a church with no decoration whatsoever, lit by fluorescent strips, no music just psalms intoned and a 45 minute ranting sermon promising them all brimstone and hellfire. The service lasted for 2 hours and she didn't seem to be anxious to repeat the experiment.
She also got into great trouble by inviting some elderly ladies to a Christmas tea. It took some time for her to realise that no-one ever admitted to celebrating Christmas. They all sent each other cards but no-one put them up.
My friend had a small crib scene that she put on her windowsill. She said that all the ladies sidled past it with eyes averted and she was told later that she had the reputation of indulging in 'idolatrous practices.
She gave up after that.
