White energy storage meter - howto!

You see, from the thread title, you appear to be on a legacy tariff. Only SP are obligated to support the specific tariff you are currently on.
The appliances in the building probably are suited to that particular legacy tariff - if they bo longer are (as you can bet they once were) then the landlord should pay for a suitable meter. Some re-wiring may also be required (if that was not done when the appliances weere changed)

Attempts to switch supplier with your current metering invariably end in tears.(may not be yours initially, but when the landlord finds out, they probably will be)

I think when op says 'white energy' he's referring to the Scottish Power tariff 'white meter No1'.

It is a legacy tariff and very similar to economy 7.

I'm still trying to find out what the tariff really is. ScottishPower have not replied to my email requesting information yet. 'White energy central heating' was used by the letting agent on one of the letting websites, on another one they just used electric heaters. It's quite possible that this was just an option to chose when creating the add.
  • frugalmacdugal is correct white meters simply refer to the old pre privatisation name for what we know as E7 & E10 in England. Its any meter that delivers a different way of consuming and counting 'off peak' energy, introduced in England and Scotland in late 70's early 80's, the whole of the UK-CEGB was broken up in 1990 I think. So its simply distinct tariff that delivers one rate for day time and another rate for other off-peak times, the same as we all have in England although we in England mainly have upgraded AMPY type digital meters, thousands of older spinning meters and white meters still exist all over the UK.

If a credit check is a problem with Scottish Power your best bet is to switch to EDF and give them a try.All the big six run credit checks but EDF are supposed to be quite relaxed on who they accept. You can find out your tariff if you search through a comparison site and have a look at Scot Powers standard/variable tariff for Eco 7.

Thanks. Will see what happens. So far SP has not answered my question with regards to whether they provide power for this flat and on what tariff, but welcomed me to their customer base only, asking me to sign up somewhere *sigh*
  • Hi,

does the meter key not identify the supplier?

Yes, I'm sure it does. It's one of those things I did not take a photo of, and I'm currently 6 hours away at my old flat. I now know that energy is supplied by Scottish Power, but they are unable to tell me on which tariff, and if I would mind signing up for their cancer support PAYG, which, btw seems to be more expensive than the regular PAYG anyway.

Storage heaters work by heating up during the night, and giving out heat during the day. They have two controls. One is for how much to heat up during the night, and the other controls the rate at which heat is given out during the day. You will need to use the second one of these, by closing it down in the [STRIKE]morning when you go out[/STRIKE]evening when you go to bed, and opening it up in the afternoon when you get home if you are cold.

As the heater takes in heat at night, close the 'Output' (down to zero or as low as it will go), otherwise the heat comes straight back out again.
It's a bit of trial and error how much you need to store (Input), and some days you may find you don't need to change the output. Keep an eye on the weather forecast - if tomorrow looks cold you may need a higher input and vice versa.
Once you are in have a lookat the model of the heaters and see if you can find a manual online. I never had one left by my landlords.

You'll find that you may get a fair amount of heat from your neighbours so you don't need your own heating as much. Downside of this is that you'll probably hear a lot from your neighbours flats too.
  • MPAN is a 21 digit number unique to you only, it identifies your exact meter and is printed on your bill and e-account and also identifies your distributor / area code etc. This number is your your precise tariff, your whole life for the duration in that dwelling. Find, eyeball and photograph the meter, its MPAN and its meter readings or you may start your new life paying for a years arrears for a previous tenant. Best of luck.

There are several quite different 'white meter' tariffs that SP supply

They are all legacy tariffs (see my previous post for issues regarding these)

The one you refer to is indeed similar to E7, except it provides 8.5 hours of cheap electricirty every day.
