For some reason they were unwilling to let me have the place because of my wage (i was in a good job with bad pay, now in a very good job with very good pay) I really wanted the place and was told that anywhere I went would likely…

That changes things.. strictly rent is for the whole property and up to the tenants to cover the whole thing together. You would have the same period if its a joint and several liability so so unlikely that its a rolling 6 monthly contract if your friend pays monthly.

Can you post the sections of the tenancy agreement about rent & rental period / dates as well as notice?
