Watchdog tonight.

On Watchdog tonight,a car sales garage was investigated. They bought a VW Polo for £500 & drove off. They stated that because the car had no MOT,the tax & insurance would be invalid.I don't think that's correct.

YES the VED would be invalid , as VED is now refunded to the seller , insurance ? perhaps it was a traders policy

how did they drive the car off the forecourt without A valid MOT ? they knew prior to purchasing the car that it did not have a valid MOT so it should not have been driven on the road unless it was being taken to a pre booked MOT

also any tax on the car would have been refunded when the car went into trade so the car should have had new tax purchased before it was driven off the forecourt

so did watchdog do things right or did they break the law by driving the car on a public road?

It went onto a lowloader and then to a garage for what they'll say was a prebooked mot.
  • Hi, I saw the programme & really thought it was a useless article.
They buy a £500 banger that is 15 years old & pick at the tyres being 1.55mm when the limit is 1.6mm, broken wipers & washers.
The car didn't start when they first viewed it, that car was old & needed attention. But to have BBC's top consumer programme picking on a back street garage selling bangers, it was just lazy journalism.
Insurance companies like policyholders to have an MOT but it doesn't invalidate the policy & doesn't even carry points when caught by Plod!

That is what you think you saw on television

they showed the car moving along the road with a camera pointing through the broken screen and up at the trees and then you saw the canopy of the filling station come into view

you never actually see anything that would prove the car was driven on the road

So why did they mention it was round the corner from the patrol station?
