If families are spending more on other areas, such as gifts for their children, they will have to economise somewhere. Young children aren't that interested in gourmet food so bread and milk is one way of reigning the budget in. In a family with 3 little ones I doubt a loaf of bread and 4 pints of milk would last for 2 days.ScarletMarble wrote: »I never understood the buying frenzy myself and my colleagues that I have discussed this with.
Over Christmas Day and Boxing Day, between the 3 of us - we will use 1 pint of milk for teas and coffees and a third of a loaf of bread. My colleagues consume similar amounts, which is below average for them.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

We are a family of 4 with visitors most days, can assure you we get through a loaf and 4 pints on a daily basis, and to save making a trip to the shop every couple of days, I buy in bulk usually 6 milk x 4 pints at a time, same with the bread and get some strange looks at checkout!0

I've noticed a lot more places not bothering on New Years Day, particularly if they sell non-essentials. I remember the rare occasion I worked it (would rather work Boxing Day as less of a hangover) NYD was really really quiet as I think everyone was hungover at home.
My friend works for a supermarket and the top sellers on NYD are full English breakfast items - bacon, sausages, eggs etc! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I live alone so don't use a lot of bread and milk but do keep a stock of longlife milk and part baked bread rolls, the vacuum packed ones, just in case I cant get out to shop.Slimming World at target0

There's 3 of us and Bacon sarnies on Xmas day and boxing day would get rid of a loaf ! I buy the part baked rolls from Aldi too to add to my bread supply, i have a fear of running out of bread ! Milk i can do without, i only drink green tea and don't eat cereal. Daughter has a glass of milk occasionally but wouldn't be upset if we ran out.0
